Margaret - just checking on Stellaluna. How is she doing? Beau has had 3 negatives, so is no longer has giardia. Beau is 5 mos old this next week - how time flies. He is so sweet and extremely confident.
I had taken Beau off Taste of the Wild and was feeding him Acana, but he really does not want to eat it. About 2 weeks ago, I switched to Fromm and he is doing very well on it and seems to really like it. Charlie still prefers Before Grain Buffalo or Wellness Core, but I am going to try to switch him to From. Beau is eating From Beef Frittata and Charlie does not like the small kibble size, so I need to a disc size to please him. LOL
We are enroute to Phoenix area for a couple of months and the boys are traveling like troopers! Take care and have a wonderful New Year!
Hi Margaret ~ You asked the treatment I used on Beau. As I mentioned earlier in the posts, we caught Beau's giardia on our wellness visit to the vet which was 3 days after we brought him home. The fecal came back positive and my vet recommended we try a 7 day panacure treatment. After that we did another fecal and it was positive. We then did a 7 day metro treatment, waited a week and did another fecal. Again it was positive and count had not changed. She then put him on a 10 day metro treatment and that did the trick! He has now tested negative. My vet said he needs to test negative on three separate occassions in ordered to be considered giardia free! We need one more negative and then we should be home free.
I have use a product I got from a holistic vet called Animal Essentials Plant Enzymes & Probiotics since we found out he had giardia. Initially, I gave him 1/2 of an 1/8 tsp, now at 25 lbs he is getting 1/8 tsp in his breakfast only.
I was totally obsessive about taking Beau out to pooh and getting it picked up immediately (using an old fork so I could get up almost everything) and then washing the area with a mix of peroxide and water (1 pt peroxide to 40 parts of water) because I did not want Charlie to come in contact with it.
When I talked to Kim, she told me you can use panacure and metro together - but I did not have to do that thank goodness. I think she is doing the best she can under the circumstances. Charlie our 2 year old was born Dec 18th and we picked him up on Valentines 2011. He had no issues whatsoever, so I wonder if it is the difference in the time of the year they were born.
I do not think the cocoanut oil is enough. When I was talking to my vet about treatment, she found it interesting that coconut oil was an alternative treatment in that the parasite thrives on fat, but I have not done any research on it. she was going to and let me know, but I forgot to ask her the last time I was in.
I am just so thankful to be past this! I hope your little Stella get past it soon too! I see you have other doggies, have they also stayed negative?
