well i am new to this breed and am looking for a little advice, tips words of wisdom. I have never had a dog w long hair so that is going to be a challenge. He is 10 weeks and a now has become 3x more active then he was a week ago. He puts EVERYTHING in his mouth, but quick to drop it is i tell him too. So i am glad i found this group thanks to a existing member.
he seams to try to eat everything. i have to remind my kids that he is a baby and babys put a lot of thing in there mouths....there some what used to it...my little one was not there long ago. toilet paper seams to be one of the thing he really likes. he has plenty of toys to re-enforce the good things to chew. I had a Great dane before. I know there big goof balls but not as active as this breed. It seams like if he does not get walked daily he gets up during the night time. Any suggestions on that?
I think that will just take time..as he gets older, he'll be able to hold his bladder and bowels longer and sleep better through the night. All the pent up puppy energy!
Welcome! Floyd sure has a sweet little face! We never had a long haired dog before either. He stays pretty clean and we just brush him once a week. He was groomed when he was about 5 months old and is due to be groomed again. We always had labs and no matter how often I ran the sweeper there always seemed to be dog hair everywhere. I am amazed at the difference a non or low shedding dog makes. This was the first Christmas in a long time that the tape on the packages didn't have a little dog hair stuck to it :)
It seamed w my other dog...we no longer have her...i would find more of her hair every where else but on her. It will be nice not having to sneak out of the house for fear that u will get dog hair on ur nice clothes b4 a party. I brush him almost every day to get him used to it.He lays on his back and enjoys being brushed. He still tries to eat the brush every now and again. He loved his 1st bath...which is good.
Welcome Corie! This community will be very helpful as you learn about doodle ownership! Check out some of our groups like: Puppy Madness (excellent past discussions in there that will help you...please do look through them all as you'll surely find TONS of advice from other puppy owners). Also you might like the Doodle Grooming group to learn all about grooming and the challenges you may face and how to deal with them.
Since this is is your first long haired dog...I HIGHLY recommend you start getting your pup accustomed to grooming immediately. When your puppy is tired after a bit of play/exercise, introduce puppy to combs and brushes...taking it slow and rewarding with treats for good behavior and acceptance of the grooming tools. If you have clippers turn them on and give it a treat for showing interest. Play with his feet and toes so he gets used to that as you will have to do trimming in that area when his fur gets longer.
Congrats on your new pup and feel free to ask questions any time!
Congrats on the new puppy! Make sure you take plenty of pictures - they grow so fast! I took a lot of Koda when he was growing up, but I wish I took more when he was really young. You get so busy dealing with puppy stuff (house training and keeping things out of their mouths lol) that you forget to whip out that camera.
Oh and toilet paper was a favorite of Koda too! He loved to shred it into tiny pieces. :)
