Magic is dead from tainted food and the courts decided Menu foods is at fault. The decision does not satisify any of us.

From Consumer Affairs.com:

Grieving pet owners -- whose dogs and cats became sick or died last year after eating melamine-tainted food -- are one step closer to recovering their economic losses, though not all consumers are applauding a proposed settlement.
One called it "a slap in the face."
A U.S. District Court Judge in Camden, New Jersey yesterday gave preliminary approval to a $24 million settlement in a class action lawsuit that stems from the largest pet food recall in U.S. history.
"What we did get out of this settlement for consumers is the possibility of complete recovery of all economic damages -- even for lost carpets and time -- in addition to their veterinary bills. Even in cases where people do not have documentation of their damages, the settlement allows in some cases up to $900 for each person."

I feel the same as Maryann... When are "pets" going to stop being personal property and be Household( I would use the word Family) Members.
I agree with the people who are holding out for changes in Pet Food safety. If anything does come from all the loss it should be that.
Lynne, I remember when I first started coming to DK and reading your story. It is heartbreaking, I think about pain you and your family must of gone through with Magic. You have every right to be upset.
Pets are considered "Chattel" according to the laws of this country. That's why animal abusers get such a small jail sentance, if any at all. That's why puppy mills are allowed to exist. That's why nothing will change until we demand that laws are changed.

My family has healed about this. We now have two beautiful Doodles that we adopted to fill our lives. I have quietly convinced many people to stop feeding crap food to our dogs and do some homecooking. That is Magic's Legacy: That other dogs won't die because of the profits for other's.
And that IS Magic's Legacy...that her death, as tragic and heartbreaking as it will always be for you, Cody, and your family, will not have been in vain. It's small comfort, I know...but so many other dogs (like my goofball) will have longer, healthier lives, because YOU turned your grief into something proactive and positive.
I am so proud to know you. Hugs from the itchy guy & me.
Hugs back to the itchy guy from the Jersey Goofball, The Rescued Princess and me!
