My heart is heavy and I am crying. I received an e-mail from one of my adoptive parents saying her 18-month-old puppy was killed by a car two days ago. The pup ran through his electric fence and into a car. When people ask me about electric fences, I try hard to discourage them from using them. There are too many ways a puppy/dog can get hurt or killed. Dogs need a solid barrier to protect them. Period. I feel terrible and wish I had been louder expressing my feelings about electric fences. I will never forget that puppy's little face and chipper nature. This is a sad morning.

What devastating news. That is how my Calli's dad was killed when she was just a baby. I'm totally against invisible fences for that reason.

My heart is heavy along with yours.
Oh, Jen, I so agree. Most people have no idea how dangerous those "fences?" are. Thank you for your empathy.
Oh Patty my sincere sympathy to both you and the family, so tragic. I can only try to imagine their pain and on top of that how could you not do the 'coulda, shoulda, woulda, didn't' thing to yourself. And your pain my friend, well ~ it is kind of like being their birth mothers isn't it? No matter the distance of time and miles since they left our nest, we still feel both the tears and the joy that are their future. I will be praying that your heart is lightened today.

Blessings ~
Dianne
After I received the e-mail, I called the woman and she is devastated, she could hardly talk. She is wrapped in misery and guilt. Thank you for the prayers, kind friend. And, you are right, like our human children these little ones never leave our hearts. I've been cuddling my dogs for the last hour.
Very sad and I'm so sorry for those people. However, I just got the fence installed last weekend. There are many pros and cons to them and I have heard many of them when I posted a discussion before I ordered the fence. It DOES work for many. I don't know this exact example and the circustances, but if their dog could not or would not stay they should have tried something else. There are also MANY types of fences and some are not so good, nor safe.

Again, I am very sorry.
I am heartbroken for you Patty. I do have and invisable fence for my Lucy just because she would run off every chance she got when she was a pup. I like of her as my child and did not want to have to resort to shocking her to keep her home, but broke down and got the efence and she ran through it 3 times until she finally learned what it is all about. BUT, we live in the country and when she ran through it she was still in the field and came back to me instantly. Each time she ran through it I would increase the correction by one notch. Now I do not even have to put the collar on her, in fact I don't even have the system plugged in, and she respects her boundries fully. I cried like a baby the first time she was corrected and that was just set on 1. At first until the fully respect their boundry you still have to watch them and keep a close eye on them. I truely feel sad for the pup and know that the efence is not for everyone. But, I do like it and feel so much more comfortable for my Lucy's safety.
How sad for the family and you... I can't imagine losing either Rufus or Jacoby....
Patty, I am so sorry for your loss. I have always been violently opposed to electric fences after being educated about them by many trainers and a few owners who experienced similar tragedies. However, I have kept quiet about it because of the many many people here who have them and seem to love them. I, too, am sorry I was not more vocal, not that my opinion would necessarily have influenced anyone.
I am posting here to express my sympathy to you and not to get up on a soapbox; however, if anyone would like lots more reasons why electric fences are not a good idea, please comment on my page & we can talk about it.
Patty, so so so sorry. Doodle hugs to you from Jack & me.
Thank you for your thoughtful reply, Karen. Many years ago I had an electric fence and multiple dogs, and the group used to punch through to the outside world on occasion. Fortunately, we lived in the country so they were never in too much danger--it was a pain to round them up, however. We eventually fenced in a large area for them. I don't like soap boxes either, and I would never shout from one (too shy); however, when asked my opinion on this topic I share it. It is also my vet's opinion. In addition to dogs breaking through the electric wire, I explain that other predators can get in when your dog believes it cannot. I am pleased to learn the system works for many, I just prefer to keep my guys behind a solid barrier. Thanks again, Karen.
Patty, I am so sorry. My heart hurts for you and the family.
Thanks, Janie, that is very kind of you.
I would never trust an electric fence!
