Max my rescue/rehome was purchased at an upscale pet store in NJ but bred by a Nancy Locke of Corona, SD.....There is absolutely no information on this breeder anywhere on the internet so I am assuming the very worst....Just for clarification...Does anyone out there have a pup pf hers from SD or know anything about her and her breeding practices?
And the "pet industry" lobby, thru their organization PIJAC, is fighting tooth and nail to prevent legislation which would mandate that these dogs, who will spend their entire lives in these cages as breeders, and the preceding puppies, who are living in wire-bottomed cages, be allowed 20 minutes per day to actually have their feet on the ground, outdoors. Think of it...months and years in which they never have their feet touch the earth, never run or play for ONE minute of the day, ever. This is legal & approved.
looking at the site I found via the mention of her kennel name by Andy...she doesn't seem like a puppy mill. Okay sites can lie...but she seems more like a BYB or a GR breeder who is dabbling in GD's undercover so her AKC friends don't know about it. She claims her dogs are all tested for hips, eyes, elbows. If that is true...NOT a puppy MILL.... But someone needs to educate her about how it LOOKS to others to know she is selling to brokers. Almost seems like she's ignorant (or doesn't think of her pups in the same way as others do...VERY valuable and precious) about the selling process (pit falls of NOT doing it herself and screening buyers) and quite irresponsible to let brokers decide who buys her pups. But MILL seems incorrect...again IF the site I found is indeed representative of her program and not just smoke and mirrors. Just the fact that she spoke on the phone with the woman makes me think not quite a mill.
NOT a breeder I'd recommend given her practices...though...so I'm not trying to vouche for her or anything, just sharing what it LOOKS like to me.
Then again other NICER looking websites and very NICE seeming people have been discovered to be MILLS. So hard to know without making a visit to the premises.
FYI-Adina, I think you are absolutely right!.....I went to the USDA and a few other sites....She is on a list of "Questionable" breeders in need of inspection.....I let Dorothy know...Hopefully this info will educate.....
Dorothy,
It appears that Nancy is a BYB...( Back Yard Breeder) and on the USDA ( United States Department of Agricultures Animal Welfare) list and a few other lists of questionable and/or disreputable breeders.....
Thank you EVERYONE!!!!...I have forwarded all of your posts and information on to Dorothy Montgomery..Max's owner and Andrea Reahm his soon-to-be new owner and future Doodle Kisses member!..This has all been so helpful!....Dorothy has written to me the following.....
"Jacquie, thank you so much for all of the information! I know better now! Next time I will make sure I'm more informed ahead of time!"
We can only hope to educate....Karen, Yay! we got through to one more person!!....Every little bit helps...
Ladies, I have been out of this loop and just read through the posts. Whew...this reads like a who-done-it. What a network and service we are doing here. Do you see what is happening? Adina, you have created something truly wonderful here! If we can keep this up, one by one we can call attention to these people until everyone KNOWS them for who they are. Reputable breeders, rescue people and dog owners who have all become friends and can spread the word on a moments notice. Hopefully, one more puppy mill is shut down.
What a great group of ladies (& men) you all are. I am proud to know you.
And you, too, lady...who started "Rescued Doodles"? You do as much or more than anyone to spread the word.
While you're catching up, have you checked out the new discussion there "Poodle mama in need?" Real tough one...
Same here...I just posted my thougts to "Poodle momma in need"...I will say it here again...I am honored to be a part of this group!....You are all an inspiration!
I've read it. Tough stuff. What's the right thing to do? If we all could kick in $1.00 whe'd have her. Then what? What about the next one ... then the next one? As long as there is greed and the people who support it, this will continue to happen. Pet stores that sell puppies need to stop and they won't do that unless people refuse to buy their animals. Letters to the Editor will help. Oprah helped tons. Tell your friends, spread the word. What an excellent soap box this site is!
FYI -Janell Gibson of Doodles to Love in SD who is on IDOG's reputable breeder list was sweet enough to return my call last night regarding Nancy Locke...she said she knows every doodle breeder in SD and she has never heard of this woman...We had a lovely conversation....Very nice woman....She truly wanted to help in every way...She promised to ask around and forward any info.....
