I'm pretty overwhelmed by all of the different coat types that are out there for labradoodles. I consider myself pretty educated but just when I think I've got it all sorted out, another website will have me doubting myself! So I thought it could be a little fun, and definitely helpful, if we discuss (with pictures, please!) the different coat types. I'm aware of wire-y or hair coats which have a higher chance of shedding and the glorious fleece coat (but curly, wavy, tight, or loose?). I just don't feel confident that if I see an un-labeled pic of a dood that I'll be able to tell for myself just what type of coat they have! I see a lot of contradicting stuff out here on the world wide web... Do you think you can help me?
Abby was about 7 months when I let the groomer take about 2 inches off her. I use a metal comb most right now...it seems to pull her puppy coat out best. I also use a slicker brush. She doesn't like being brushed either. Keeping her coat a little shorter right now makes it easier for her and me. When she gets her all of her adult coat I will decide what is best for her and me. Like you I like the shaggy look but right now 2 1/2 to 3 inches long works best for us. Ned looks like a sweetheart...
Try using "No more tears" by Johnson & Johson . Spray on after a grooming and spray lightly and let dry before grooming. It makes getting the mats out simple.

Ned is so adorable. Bella, my labradoodle matted severly at 9 months of age. We had to shave her, I love the longer coat too, I hope matting was a temporary thing. I now own a metal comb, brush and some thinning shears recommened by the groomer. I can't afford to tkae her to a groomer weekly.....................:)
We use the "hold him close" grooming technique. My husband cuddles Ned firmly to his chest while I first brush and then comb. We only do parts at a time. Ned is really good for a while and seems to enjoy it, and then as my husband switches his position he whines to get down. We groom him often and I do see an improvement in how long he tolerates the brushing. But it is exhausting and never-ending for now. I am going to try the No More Tangles - my groomer also recommended it but I never let it dry first.
Casey matted so badly as a little pup that the vet sent her directly to the groomer to be shaved! I felt like Child Protective Services was going to come after me! Now I use conditioner and things are better, but she still mats a lot and I have to cut them out individually. The groomer told me to try Infusium Leave-In Conditioner (for people), and I will try the No More Tears as well.
You can slice through many of the mats by taking a thread cutter or nail scissors and going sideways through the mat. You may be able to comb the rest out. Ned went through a horrible matting stage and seems to be getting much better. We decided to have him groomed often and keep his coat at a mid-length. Our groomer says she thins the fur. When we take him monthly - he gets the full treatment but she only charges $25 dollars and calls it a bath. When we take him less often she charges $35. Be sure to both brush (good quality slicker) and then comb (metal comb) and do it often. If you wash her, be sure to rinse really, really well. We try not to wash Ned because we just don't rinse well enough and that also causes mats!
Please don't slice through the mats sideway! You will leave big holes in the finished coat. Instead cut through the mat vertically this will just leave a thin but un-noticeable spot.
Uhm I think I said badly what you corrected. I meant sideways, perpendicular to the skin, and outward through the mat which makes the mat become 2 smaller mats. I found that often I could brush out the smaller mats. Is this correct or have I been doing it wrong? Luckily he is matting way less, and I rarely have to resort to scissors now.
I have looked at tons of pictures and I still don't know if Miley and Motta are fleece or wool. I wanna say fleece but Miley really looks like a cotton ball:) a wavy/curly one... Motta is wavy wool or fleece. He is shiney up front and not so shiney in back .
