In many provinces in Canada, driving with a dog loose in the back of your pick-up is against the law. Fines are handed out. I cringe everytime I see a dog, riding loose in a pick-up, wind blowing in their eyes and ears, and the chance of them falling out, Oh that turns my stomach. What about if you are in an accident??
All dogs, that ride in the back of a pick-up should wear a harness that they cant get out of. then secured to a cable that runs across the truck box right behind the cab. The dog can move around, but the short tether from the harness to the cable, should keep them from falling out, if by some chance they do end up over the side, they do not hang, and strangle. What about shade?
I see it all the time around here...mostly sporting dogs like labs in farmer's pick-ups, but other dogs too. I HATE riding behind such trucks for fear the dog will crash through my windshield should there be a sudden stop. It's happened to a doodle owner I know on another forum. A GSD flew through her windshield at a sudden stop. The dog died.
I hate this too. I am not sure if it is against the law here...but it should be. I also know someone personally who had their Lab in the back on a leash after hunting, but sadly the dog jummped out and was dragged to his death:(
oh this is awful! i'm pretty sure there are laws against this. oh, but my dex was IN the car and my husband forgot to put on the window lock............horrors!!! dexter rolled down the window, jumped out and ran across 4 lanes of hwy 50 traffic!!!!! i about had a heart attack! it was insane! i jumped and ran across the traffic, as soon as he saw mom ,he ran straight back across to me!!!! dogs should be in their safty harnesses INSIDE the car for peace of mind for us!!! thank goodness he only had a scratch on one leg. it was just about the scariest thing thats ever happened to us. my husband and i had to go right home and hug our babies and soak in the hottub to stop shaking!!!!
be safe everyone!!!!
Scary! My heart would have stopped! Rosco once jumped out of my car while it was parked at a friend's house. The area was safe, but the little stinker wanted to run after a cat he saw! Thankfully I had tied his leash to the chair and it wasn't too short to hang him...but still frightening. He is usually SLOW MO when it comes to getting out of the car, but with the right motivation (kitty dinner?) he's suddenly Evil Knievel!
