Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I lost a beloved std poodle to crap food 1 1/2 years ago. Since, we've rescued 2 labradoodles. 1 from a puppy mill, 1 from shelter. I have been cooking for them & would like to share dinnertime ideas. What do you all feed your dogs? If I try to go back to premade now, they turn up their noses. My 8year old Bijon, who ate crap food for years has no more arthritis or tear stains since "real" food was put into his life. Any ideas or comments, thoughts?

I feed my two GD, Nature's Variety and I am very very happy with it. You can check their website and read about their food. It's great for doodles!

Hi everyone,

I thought I would share the recipe for Raw that I mix up for Dempsey. This came from an LD breeder. He has this in the evening mixed with a little low sodium vegetable juice, and sometimes sprinkled with a little shredded cheese if i have any, and Canidae kibble in the morning. This has worked very well for us and he's very healthy! I usually use sweet potatoes for the vegetable, but have used green beans, carrots and whatever we have cooked and leftover. If we have a little bit of veggies leftover, I'll freeze it for the next time I make dog food. You also can used tuna in place of the mackerel or salmon, but the mercury levels make me shy away from it.

1 lbs. ground beef/chicken/turkey
3 eggs with shells
1 cup yogurt (any flavor)
1 can mackerel or salmon (sm. Can single recipe/lg. Can double )
1 cup of pured vegetables (if you choose)
2 cups steam rice (if you choose)
2 tbs. wheat germ
2 tbs. brewers yeast (nutritional yeast)
2 tbs. kelp
3 tbs. flaxseed oil (or fish oil)

Mix all together in stand mixer. Freeze in meal size portions (for Dempsey 5 ounces). Double for about 2 weeks worth.
This has turned into a really great resource. I have come back to it several times and copied a lot of it onto my documents. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed.
Currently my 7 month old ALD is eating Innova Puppy. He is a small/medium, and our breeder says to expect him to be no more than 30ish lbs. I really would like to switch to Innova EVO, but am worried about the high protein content and wonder if it is appropriate for him since he is still only 7 months old.

Does anyone know the rule of thumb with grain-free foods and when you can start feeding it to your puppies? I have also heard some good things about Nature's Variety grain-free kibble line, Instinct. Does anyone have any experience with it?
Hi Odie, If you read through this discussion, there is some excellent information. This was one of the earliest discussions here on DK and I am so proud to have started it, but even more impressed with the people and posts, here. I learned so much from this one discussion and I hope you will also.

I started my 3 dogs with Innova Evo Red Meat Bites dry when they were a little older than 7 months, but have never had a problem with it. I also homecook a mostly meat stew that I use as my wet food once a day. The Evo, I leave out all day and they free feed as desired. I hope this helps and others with younger pups can help too. But my biggest piece of advice in feeding is NEVER STOP READING and LEARNING. I will never fully trust ANY commercial dogfood company again.
Hello......I have recently changed my dog's food to all natural. I've added garlic, crushed brazil nuts (anti cancer), flaxseed oil. I even buy organic chicken. She eats as well as we do. She eats better than my teenager !!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, in my searching, which I seem to be doing all the time, I came across this site which is definitely worth a look.
I would recommend anyone and everyone that loves their beloved pets to take a look at this and pass on the info.
My little girl has improved greatly. Even her breath was not the normal doggy breath, and now it seems to be back to normal (like a dog's breath is supposed to be.....if you know what I mean)...

Bye for now.....Kerry
