So Ricki called the Southern Oregon Humane Society today to find out about 7 doodles that were listed there on Petfinder.

It turns out that the 7 were the last of 28 doodles who were seized from an unlicensed BYB in Northern California. They had been living in filth, were malnourished, and needed veterinary care. Some had open wounds.

Animal Control had scheduled all of them to be euthanized, including puppies, because they simply had nowhere to put them and no funds for vetting them. Southern Oregon Humane Society in Ricki's town of Medford OR stepped in.

22 of the doodles have been adopted, and Ricki reports that she was told the remaining dogs are in no danger and will no doubt also find homes.

If you care about doodles, please watch the video that accompanies this story. It's not the worst we've ever seen. It is important that everyone sees what happens when inexperienced people decide to breed their dogs. Please remember Darth and his friends the next time someone asks about breeding his doodle here in our community.

And the DRC has very few volunteers in that area. Whenever there have been available doodles in the Pacific NW, good adoption applications have poured in, and it has always been very easy to place dogs in Washington and Oregon, even large flat-coated, shedding doodles, lol, but there would have been no way the DRC could have housed 28 doodles anywhere, let alone in Oregon. That many dogs really require a physical facility.

I know, at least you didn't have to even worry about a handful of them.

The Southern Oregon Humane Society is really wonderful shelter (if there is such a thing!) and when Karen contacted me saying they had a number of doodles I was confident that they would be safe and well cared for.  We are so fortunate to have such a great facility in our community.

The SOHS has a vehicle  that they use to collect dogs from shelters in neighboring counties and California bringing them here for adoption. During the foreclosure crisis when so many dogs ended up in shelters, the SOHS was making regular trips to California to save as many dogs as they could.

The SOHS Saving Train

Southern Oregon Humane Society's Saving Train is a unique shuttle bus re-fitted to transport pets safely.

Intake Supervisor Sandra Pogrebinsky and her staff make frequent trips to shelters in neighboring counties to bring back animals who may have been at death's doorstep due to time and space limitations. All of the animals are temperament tested before they're brought back to the Humane Society. Most turn out to be wonderful pets, and are quickly adopted into new, forever homes.

This organization is very deserving of support and donations. They are truly saving lives.

Love this!

I really would come back to Oregon if not for my only child....but if she ever ups and leaves us I will be on the lets go to Oregon Train for sure.

Sounds like a fabulous facility.  Our local shelter is similar and I actually donate on a monthly basis and my employer matches my contributions.
