A camera for photographing the dood...

I have a very exciting dilema. I am getting a camera for my graduation/bday present and it is allowed to cost up to $1000 with lenses. What should I get? I like to photograph dogs so it has to be fast, work in low light, and have really good image stabilization. I have been considering the Sony SLT A55 or Sony SLT A65 but my sister is cautioning against it. So, what is so bad about Sony that no one uses them? It's reviews sound great!
