Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have a almost 12 week doodle. He is 16 pounds. We brought him home at 8 weeks weighing 9 pounds. He has always been picky. At most meals not finishing it. Vet feels he is a bit boney. Suggested chicken broth on food to encourage him to eat it.
Breeder had him in Iams. Feeding schedule was 1/2 cup 3 times a day. He would almost never eat it all. Probably only a cup a day. I tried mixing in a little Merrick thinking maybe it would be more palatable. I did not notice a difference. If I add a egg, cottage cheese or cooked veggies he will eat the whole thing. I hate the idea of preparing food for a young dog but I'm a little concerned after last week's visit. Stool is well formed and negative for al the regular stuff.
Pup has plenty of energy. Husband even has walking him off lead all weekend on the conservation land. Wants to run and play with the kids for the most part.
Does anyone else have a picky doodle? Someone told me its a poodle thing. How concerned should I be?

It's not a Poodle thing; it's the individual dog. Lots and lots of discussions and advice about this in the Food Group, lots of picky doodles there.

Oh, and all canned chicken broth has onions in it. Onions are toxic to dogs. Please join us in The Food Group for some better advice. Like this: http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup/forum/topics/an-ode-...

Will do Karen. Just hate to make bad habits in a young pup. Conflicted finding he is all fluff and all bones is a bit worrying. .

What an adorable puppy.  As Karen says, there's lots of info in the Food Group.  I know what it's like with a picky Doodle, but unless there's something physically wrong they don't starve.  They do eat when they get hungry enough.  They do get used to having delicious "people food" added very quickly, so I would be careful of that.  I found that giving them five minutes to eat and if they don't, taking it away and waiting until the next meal helps.  My youngest Doodle was always picky.  He was diagnosed with IBD and now he can only eat hydrolyzed food and treats....his body reacts to other proteins.  He had to learn that was all he was going to get to eat.  He has not lost weight, but he has skipped a few meals during this process.  It was proof to me that they do eventually learn and will eat when they get hungry enough.

Thanks. I hear you on the people food. I don't mind feeding it to him but worry in a young pup about the future. If we ever decide to kennel him he would be very hungry! My dog walker was stiring the food with her finger and giving encouragement while he ate. I could do that maybe once while he is eating but sounds like a another bad habit. Given the boneyness per the vet obviously I've gotta up my game. I'll look through the old food forum posts.
I just want him to be ok. If I have play games and cook for him now I am already concerned about his golden years.
