A girl-at-work's step-daughter just came into work with a cute little white fluff ball of a dog.  She found him in a grocery store parking lot, in a shopping cart, with a plastic grocery bag of dog food.

Here he is.  He's probably around 10 lbs or so.  We're thinking possibly a maltese or poodle mix.

He was a little scared at first, but then his tail was wagging and he was saying hi to everyone.  He smells good, like he's been recently groomed, but he has a lot of eye boogers and red fur around his eyes.  He's also a little skinny.  He is not neutered.

Based on how she found him, it seems like he was abandoned.  There's a Pet Supplies Plus store right there, but if you were one of their customers, why would you leave your dog alone in the parking lot?  He wasn't near a car.  The bag of food wasn't a new bag - it was just some dog food in a plastic grocery bag.  We also have a no-kill animal shelter, so why not take him there?  Sometimes, they are full, so maybe they did try.

He's on his way to my vet now to get scanned for a microchip.

I just don't know what to make of it.  Some things point to abandonment, but the fact that he's clean and very friendly don't really support that.

I'll probably end up trying to talk my mom into taking him if he's not chipped, but I'm still worried that someone is missing him.

Oh, there's also a retirement home behind this shopping center, and I think they are allowed to have small dogs.  So maybe he belongs or belonged to someone from there.

He is at my co-worker's house happily playing with her puppy now.  Her older dog, who is only about 2 or 3, is staying away from the playful boys.  I know it's probably too early to say, but it seems like he will adjust well to his new home, wherever that may be.  Now, how to convince my mom that her home is where he should be?  I think Halas would like playing with a small fluff dog.
that is so sad.  I hope he found his happy permanent home.
Did she ask the employees at Pet Supplies Plus if they have seen him before.  I know sometimes people try to leave dogs at pet store, maybe they told them no, so they left the dog in the parking lot.  I would put up flyers and post the dog on Craigslist - no photos though - make the people describe the dog.  Dont give up finding the owners for at least a month.   Cute dog - I'd want to keep him!
What a sad but potentially happy story. I hope this works out well.

Thank goodness a kind person found him. Hopefully it works out and he ends up with your Mom.

Keep us posted, he is adorable.

I am so glad he fell into the right arms.. I just know he is going to have a happy life now.

Wow-sad that someone could do this! I'm glad good people were there to help him out and hopefully findhim a home cute puppy!!

We've checked with all of the animal places around here - shelter, animal control, etc., and no one has reported that they are missing a dog.  Halas and the puppy are meeting this afternoon.  If they get along, I think my mom is going to take the puppy.  I'll let you know how it goes.
