Addison disease in Labradoodles

Our dog Rosie was extremely sick and we took her to the emergency pet hospital on Friday evening. She tested positive for Addison disease. We found out the following at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labradoodle

 

"A significant number of Mutigenerational and Australian Labradoodles have also been found to suffer from Addison's Disease.^[25] The Australian Labradoodle Association of America is currently conducting a study to try and determine how widespread the problem has become." Our breeder was not part of the Australian Labradoodle Associaion of America. Breeders should test their dogs for Addison and not breed them. Girls are effected twice as much as the boys and both parents have to be carrier for the dog to have it.

 

It has been heartbraking to see Rosie so sick and with daily drugs and a shot every 25 days she should be ok. This makes me think twice about which breeder I will pick for our next doodle.

I am so so sorry to read about Rosie. I am hear to let you know that she can live a long, happy, healthy life!!!

Back in the day, 28 years ago, our 11month old Bearded Collie was diagnosed with Addison's. Over the course of her LONG life, 13+ years, she only had a handful of Addisonian episodes. I kept her as stress free as humanly possibly with 2 young daughters.

In those days, she had to take 3 pills, twice a day and 1/2 of a salt pill. There was even a Memorial Day weekend that she decided to go visit neighbors several blocks away without asking and was gone for 3 days. Even with that stress, she did not get sick. I had a groomer come to the house in his truck (which was unheard of back then) to reduce her stress.

Paws crossed that Rosie lives that same happy and healthy long life like my Maggie did!!!!

I am so sorry to hear about Rosie, how heartbreaking for you to see her suffer :-(  There is a family that is in the same soccer league as my daughter and they have a Labradoodle that also has Addison's Disease.  It does seem now that he is under vet's care and the medication is working that he is leading a very normal doodle life.  They have told me that they constantly have to make sure he is well hydrated and always has water available. They bring a gallon of water and a regular bowl to every event I see them at - and they bring him with them everywhere.

I find this so interesting that I am learning ideas about my own disease through this thread. I have a few questions I am going to raise with my endocrinologist.

Poor Rosie.  I feel terrible for you Karina.  Hopefully you will be able to manage this disease effectively enough for Rosie and you to enjoy a long and healthy life together.  I will keep a good thought for you both.

Unfortunately there is no test for Addisons other than an ACHT (which only confirm if the dogs has the disease, not if its a carrier) so if none of the dogs in the line has an episode, you would never know. Our ASD has just been diagnosed so we are at the early stages but would like to talk to anyone else with more experience. This is him - Kobi - only 18 months old bless him...
