Hi, all.

One of our neighbors has an invisible fence. I was out walking Truffle when he approached it and it suddenly looked like he was having a seizure. It happened twice in quick succession. It then occurred to me that he might have been electrocuted by the fence.

When it was happening, he looked like a Looney Tunes cartoon character - with his legs splayed in different directions. He's fine - we proceeded along on on our walk without further incident, but it was truly scary for a brief instant.

Has anyone ever experienced this before?  It must be a malfunction, no?

The Power Service Company just got back to me. They did their testing and the area was "clear," meaning they didn't pick up any voltage. He did say it is possible that the owners could have some underground wiring that wasn't turned on when they passed by this morning but might have been on yesterday when we were on our walk, although I think that's a long shot at this point. The neighbor hasn't been home so far and I hope I'll have the chance to talk to her before I go away on Thursday, if nothing else at least to find out if there's anything buried along their property line that might explain what happened.

I've also put a call into my vet's office and will be taking him to see her tomorrow AM.  The receptionist said she'll probably do blood work - I know you can't be too safe, but would it be unreasonable for me to ask her to hold off on the tests unless it happens again? I don't want to subject Truffle to what may very well turn out to be unnecessary testing at this point.

hmmm, with our septic system, we have wires running underground for various reasons.  One that comes to mind is a system on one of tanks that has an Airator (sp).   Back a few decades, the systems were on a timer and ran 12 hours on, 12 hours off.  Now, it is by law, to run them constantly, although many dont.  Anything is possible. Just a septic pump that kicks on as needed and runs intermediately. I have more underground wires and pumps in my yard than I even know about.

Anyway, ask them?  Certainly they might want to know too since they have a dog.

So glad you had this tested. HATS OFF to this great company!

OMD... I just remembered something. Years ago, ( 27 to be exact) my water well arced!  The cat went flying off the patio, the electrical box burned.  All simple but POWERFUL.  Those wires are also 3 feet underground and would only kick on as needed

The sump pump electricity is all in the house though, no?

I have total of seven pumps?  Most wires are outside

Two sumps in the basement that are indoors.   A well pump ( outside) that runs underground.  An initial sump that carries waste out ( outside), another carries to the waste tank ( outside)
then it is pumped to the aerator system (outside) which has a very expensive aerator  pump (outside)

hmmm I lost count how many I have but I have had to have the front yard rewired. Lots of underground wires in front and back.

Wow I do have a wire to my well pump and a low voltage one to the gate and one to some front lights : )

J, I never thought of this, but I have a wire to my well pump AND our electric runs underground (across our meadow) to the house from the street.

Yes, great indeed.  I spoke to the president of the company (he's the one who came out along w/ a colleague) and told him I'd close the loop with him as soon as I learned more.  It's easy to forget that there people around who are just genuinely interested in other folks' (and dogs') well-being and the fact that they took the time out of their day to just mosey on over and have a look speaks volumes about their values, I think.

Well, it' stood to know. As for blood work I really doubt it will help at all.

Wow! Talk about great customer service!  So glad they were able to get back to you so promptly.

Now to talk with the owners of the house.....

JMO, but if Truffle is acting completely normal, I think I would hold off on the testing. But, I can understand your wanting to have him checked out too.  Not sure what blood work would show?

I agree with you, Ro, re: the testing.  The more I've thought about it this afternoon, the more I'm inclined to cancel the appointment for now and just ask that the vet give me a call so I can lay out the situation for her.  My mom was with me when it happened yesterday and I asked her for a reality check to make sure I wasn't imagining what I saw - and she agreed that he was definitely reacting to something.  My gut keeps telling me that he either felt something or sensed something that freaked him out.  The property is where my youngest daughter's bus stop is, so I'm there at least a couple of times a day.  I really hope I'm able to speak to her before we leave on vacation on Thursday!

Good luck! :)
