Hello Fellow Doodle Lovers,

My Pierre had some allergy issues,  (going on 6 years old at this point) and I was finally able to take him off prescription duck food. He is on Six Fish Orijen and doing well.I t seems his allergy really is outside. More on how I am dealing with that later. Would it be okay to order the Regional Orijen once in a while to give him variety?

Does he need variety?

Also, I did  the math, and Orijen has so many calories in one cup of food compared to his prescription food, it will cost me 1/3rd less to give him Orijen.

Thank you!

Marianne

Orijen is a great product, but IF you suspect food allergies, you're better off with a limited ingredient formula. Regional Red has multiple, multiple proteins in it, so you really don;t want to introduce a whole lot of new proteins (beef, pork, lamb, and bison in addition to a variety of fish) in a dog who has some allergy issues. I'd stick with the 6 Fish or look at the Acana Singles, which are limited ingredient formulas made by the same company that makes Orijen.

We have a lot of information on these topics and everything related to food in The Food Group here. Please join us there, and we'll be happy to help!

Thank you for your wisdom. We will stay on Six Fishes. I will scan The Food Group.

I am totally for rotating proteins and have done that for many years.  I just don't believe, no matter how complete a food is, one single food can provide everything my dogs need.  Food allergies are not as common as some think.  As to allergies......I have one dog with SEVERE environmental allergies.  I have been through the mill, but now have everything under control.  He is a different dog.  :)
