Ginny, what great information.
I don't understand how I would be able to have top three picks either. I was upfront with my breeder that I didn't care about looks or coat - it was all about ultimately ending up with a puppy who had a temperament and potential to live with us - we live in a public space, in the public eye, with the public coming and going from our property from dusk to dawn. While I enjoyed seeing the litter pics, I knew I could end up with any of them, or even none of them. The breeder recommended two to me that she felt would be good picks for our situation, and we selected one of them after reviewing testing, health records and breeder notes and video. Our breeder has placed many successful service dogs, and also helps select those as well. We do know it's just a start, and the training and exposure is up to us from here on out, but we feel it was a very good pick, with her help and insight and our knowledge about our own situation. By the time I met our puppy, he was already matched with us.
