I took Mabel to the Vet Friday because during the week she was occasionally scratching which is unusual for her. She would scratch in this spot pictures above. I looked a few times and found that it wasn't red, there were no ticks or fleas, no stingers, NOTHING. A few hours later it was red, beefy and a little bloody from her claws I imagine. The vet said she may have been stung. She may have had a little cellulitis develop after getting her vaccines because this is typically the site in which they are administered. It could have been from the Frontline since it's close to the site where Frontline would be applied. The vet told me to give her Benedryl every 8 hours. He gave me an oral antibiotic which is to be given three times a day. That is a huge challenge because she already has a sensitive stomach. We don't feed her people food and the only way I can give her medicine is to hide it in people food. The vet also gave me a spray called GenOne Spray. When I spray it on the wound she flinches, trembles and quivers. I think it's very painful to her.I thought she wasn't going to bite me when I tried to clean it ( as recommended)  She is panting a lot which is not normal. They said to wait until Wednesday and if she wasn't better to call them back. I can't sleep and wish I could take her to the vet now. My husband is traveling for work and the closest animal hospital is an hour away. I have 4 little ones sleeping. I have NO idea why this is happening or what caused it. This happened out of the blue. It seems like the vet doesn't have any idea why either. The spot seems to be getting worse. (On Friday the spot was the size of a quarter). Tonight she didn't want to play.Does anyone have any ideas or know what this might be from experience? 7.6 hours till my vet opens.  :(

Oh poor baby :(   That looks pretty bad, I would go to the vet ASAP.  Please keep us posted I am curious to find out what it is.

Waiting for time to pass...First appointment is at 2 pm.

How did it go overnight?  Did it get any worse?  Did you get any sleep?

Hi Wendy, overnight was hard. She just hid in her crate all night. Normally she follows me around and will sleep next to the bed.She doesn't like her crate very much and is rarely in there.  I had to go find her and call her into my room. In the morning she wouldn't play at all or run! She was lazy and really down in the dumps. I couldn't even touch her near that spot. When she wouldn't play with her favorite toy I knew things were not good. The vet gave her two injections and some shampoo/soap and she is remarkably better!!!!! Night and day. She is wagging her tail and being silly. Tonight will be a better night.

Try to be patient but at least she will be seen. Good luck.

Try to keep it dry.  You will both get through it.  The vet may have some more ideas now when (s)he looks at the progression.   Dogs are susceptible to many things in their environment, and you cannot totally protect them (just like your children).  My dog loves the warm washcloths for his poison oak which he seems to get frequently.  It is relaxing to him and to me.  I just get a clean cloth and a bowl of warm water and have him lie on the couch on his back.  He tends to get it on his tummy and his armpits (besides eyes and ears).  He actually kinds of moans with delight when he sees the washcloth come out.

Very cute story!

I was bitten by a Brown Recluse spider a few years ago, my leg looked like your poor baby's spot.Riley and I will keep Mabel in our prayers. Please let us know how you all are doing. Big doodle hugs!

I wondered about a spider bite... it was my first thought. I posted an update on what the vet said. Thank you for thinking of us.

Oh No Poor Mabel. it looks very painful.
Good luck at the vets today. I hope they can figure it out & get her on the mend!

I hope that Mabel feels better soon.  Keep us posted.

Thinking of you and Mabel this morning and hoping the vet can give her some relief. Please update when you can!
