In a recent discussion, our token Poodle lady, Carol, recommended someone 'match' their dog who wasn't pooping.  I finally had a chance to Google it and discovered it means this:

You moisten the sulfur end of 1-2 matches and then stick those sulfur ends into the dog's rectum, allowing only a bit of the ends to hang out.  Apparently this acts as a poo stimulant and helps dogs hurry up and go when necessary.  Apparently show people do this and it is not harmful!  Perhaps another useful trick in the difficult to housebreak adult dog...anyone here ever done it?'

I am flabbergasted at how much info there is on the internet about this.

The general concensus seems to be that this is the exact way to do it:

How To Match Your Dog To Make It Poop

"Take one or two paper matches and put the sulfur tips briefly in your mouth to wet them.

Straddle your dog facing its butt.

Pull the tail out of the way and insert the now wet sulfur tips of the matches in your dog’s anus. Deep enough that just the ends of the matches are visible and hang out just a tiny bit.

Release the dog.

Usually the dog will start squatting almost immediately to expel the matches. If the dog doesn’t, then you can repeat the steps above.

Do not insert more than 4 matches at a time. Rarely do you need to use 4 matches but some dogs are more stubborn than others.

When the dog squats to expel the matches, it will usually poop too. Don’t forget to clean up after your dog."

I'm flabbergasted that despite all this info on the internet I'd never heard of it and it has never been discussed here.  What kind of dog know-it-alls ARE WE?  LOL

Possibly you believe in the old tried and true--Feed the dog at certain times, take it for a walk... etc.  You know--the healthy and happy way to POO

Amen!

Apparently, this method is supposed to be for people who have special situations, like when Nancy has discussed that Ned has trouble "going" on leash when they are camping, and some of the articles did stress that you should only use this method initially to get the dog accuastomed to "going" in unfamiliar areas or circumstances. Supposedly, once they get used to it, you can discontinue the practice.

True.  And I understand special circumstances.  Been there, done that, with a dog which would NOT VOID for many days.

This brings up another question though for those who may take advantage of such a practice; can the dog become addicted to matching as humans do with laxatives?

I know one trainer that uses it in house training in addition to minding their feeding schedules.  She is a stickler about training to eliminate on cue, of course recognizing that there are times when a dog simply does not need to go.  But she travels with and shows in obedience so ya gotta get such dogs emptied on a schedule.

I agree with you, Joanne :)

We did discuss it in the recent discussion when Carol suggested it and I think it's been brought up before. I still think it's not a great idea for most dogs.

Isn't it funny, I remember that whole situation well, but the thing about the match completely escaped my memory.

But then, it was almost two years ago and I'm old. :)

Someone is older.
