This is a warning against Hartz Flea treatment products. It has caused numerous deaths in cats and dogs, not to mention severe burns (like this one) and seizures. Veterinarians say it is pure poison

It would not surprise me if this was true.  I actually just saw a WORSE photo on facebook this morning, that was also claiming that HARTZ flea and tick topicals were to blame.  This poor dogs skin was peeling off from the base of it's tail to the nape of it's neck (where a topical would be applied).  Just awful.

I hate to use pesticides on my girls, and have been trying to fight it since Annie was a puppy -  and we've been lucky - no fleas. But there are ticks in a freaking bundance where we're at now, and the benefits of using a topical on Annie outweighs the risks of her possibly picking up a tickborne disease. I would never use Hartz though, I'd rather spend a little more money for a better tested product from a more reputable company.

What a terrible thing to happen - especially when you think you're doing right by your dog to prevent them from getting fleas.

I've heard of these and similar issues with Hartz  products for years and agree with the info Karen provided.  That poor dog (looks like a doodle!) must be so miserable.  I hope this helps others to avoid a similar situation.

I saw Hartz at Target on sale for like $4 and googled it!  There were so many horror stories!!!  So sad!

I have no problems believing this is real, the area looks like it could be a chemical burn and this is a chemical that is being applied to the skin.

Sometime ago, I was using I believe Advantix, and Butter got some skin irritation. It turned into Hotspot type of deal --- Irritated so he would bother it and make it more irritated, bother more and more.... It took a while to get it all healed up.

Same spot treatment did not bother Charlie. We thought since he was much older, his skin was more sensitive to the chemical... Off course we stopped using it. We now uses Vectra 3d, we get from our vet.
