Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Ok so I have been potty training Marley for 3 weeks now. She did really well in the beginning and is still doing ok. But she has started to have a few accidents lately. While I'm carrying her out after she's been sleeping in her crate for a while she started dripping down my leg. And then once after my daughter set her on my bed she started peeing. I know they are extremely smart dogs and she knows to go outside. I just can't figure out if this is common in the beginning. I mean I know you have to expect some accidents. It just seemed odd that she peed on my bed. I have only potty trained labs before. My lab boys picked it up right away and it was not an issue. And suggestions or tips would be great! Thanks

I should also say I work from home so she is with me the entire day and I do take her out quite often. She does potty outside I just didn't know if I should expect these accidents after she started training so well. She gets lots of exercise and entertainment during the day so I know it's not that.

I do recall with our Guinness that when we woke him to go out to potty after he had been sleeping in the crate there were some accidents for awhile.  I remember it because we literally ran outside once we woke him.  As I recall it didn't last long and he gained control when he got a few weeks older.  I really don't know about the accident on your bed...we didn't allow the puppies on the bed or furniture....it may be that she just got a little excited or nervous.

That's how I feel. I tell the kids to take her directly outside. Because I feel as tho she would start to go the second I put her down. Maybe we need to wake her up to go more frequently or maybe she is having to much to drink to close to bed. Hoping it wont last long:)

I do stop the water after 8:00 PM but during the day I've always let them have access to it.  I'm not sure it's necessary to wake her but I would rush her out the minute she wakes.

Wynnie's breeder said "no water after 6:30pm." I followed that rule but on occasion when I didn't get my winter coat and boots on fast enough, she would have an accident on the floor but it was rare. She also slept through the night from the day we brought her home from the breeder. I believe in the no water rule.

I wouldn't say that doodles are any harder to potty train than any of their parent breeds, and Poodles, Goldens, & Labs are all smart, relatively easy dogs to housebreak. Poodles in particular. But a lot depends on what was done by the breeder prior to the puppies going home. My last puppy (purebred Poodle) was crate and paper trained by her breeder before she ever got to me, and she housebroke in about a day and a half, lol.

You might consider ruling out a UTI.

She is doing very well I should not say she isn't. I just have to make sure she goes directly outside. I'm not sure about the bed incident either. She has slept in our bed on occasion with no issues. I'm hoping it was excitement or something. As far as the breeder goes. They only did the potty pads and they were doing great on those. I'm just not a fan of them. I usually crate train and take them out several times a day when potty training. She seriously did not have a single accident the first two weeks. So I was just surprised by it. Maybe I am slipping a little on my end and need to make sure she doesn't have the opportunity to have and accident. Thanks for your thoughts:)

Annabelle was very easy to train. The 2 times she had an accident was when she was in my husbands care and he wasn't paying attention to her signals. He had his nose stuck in a crossword the whole time. My mother in law told me before we got married that he would be a terrible baby sitter, he was and his puppy sitting wasn't any better.

I think with girl puppies who have regressed should have UTI's ruled out.

Thank you all for your opinions and suggestions! I'm hoping it's just a fluke but she does see her vet tomorrow for a booster shot so I will mention it to him as well :)

I too would rule out a UTI - Myla also regressed after a while - She would let us know to go outside, she would go pee outside and then we would play and when we brought her back inside, she would immediately pee.  I honestly didn't think it was a UTI because she was sleeping all night in her crate without going and I figured (wrongly) that if she had a UTI she would want to go outside during the night.  I finally called the vet and they asked me to bring in a Myla and if I could also bring in a urine sample (this was almost four years ago) - Myla did not like me following her around with a sour cream container when she was trying to pee lol.  It was a UTI and I really felt badly that I had not brought her in sooner!  She got some meds and was better almost immediately and has never had another one since.

I never woke a sleeping dog, so I don't know about peeing while still half asleep.  I don't think doodles, as a rule, should be hard to train because they are smart dogs.  I would be more suspicious that she had a UTI since this is new behavior.

As a puppy Ned peed once on the bed - we were camping in our RV and he peed on the bed my mom and her Westie slept on - I think it was done on purpose, however perhaps not.  It was the only time he ever peed on furniture.
