Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I think we probably all would say "absolutely" to this question, but I've been wondering about whether there is actually something about this "breed" that makes them more devoted and bonded to their family than most other breeds. I've been thinking a lot about this over the past few days after seeing the story of a DRC dog in need of adoption.  This dog (Backer, a 3 yr old Goldendoodle) just lost his owner to brain cancer.  He laid by her side while she was ill, only leaving to relieve himself.  I was feeling miserable last week with a summer cold, and I was laying down a few times during the day.  My Doods were always laying right next to me....they wouldn't leave.  Of course, this is a far cry from the story of this poor woman with brain cancer, but it really made me think.  I remember when I was first looking for a Doodle puppy, and my breeder told me about their "traits".  She said if you want a dog who will be totally devoted to you and follow you everywhere, a Doodle is for you.  We've had four other breeds of dogs over the years.  They were all very sweet and loving, but none of them were as focused on or attached to me as my Doodles.  Murph and Guinness have such different "personalities", but they are exactly the same when it comes to the way they just won't leave my side.  They NEED to be where I am.  They truly are "velcro" dogs.  So, I wonder if your Doodles are the same way....and do you think this is actually a "breed" specific thing.  In many ways that seems highly unlikely, because of course they are not actually a breed.  But, I just wonder.  On a side note, if I wasn't in a condo situation with a limit of two dogs, I would be trying my best to adopt this amazing 105 pound Doodle boy in OH.  I have trouble even wrapping my mind around that degree of devotion.  This Doodle must have one amazing heart.

Peri won't cuddle either - she swats me in the face if I hold her too long. But she follows me everywhere.
No dog has ever grabbed my heart like my girls have! I don't know why, but I love it! That being said, Oh Jane, isn't that Backer adorable! Aside from what he did, and his amazing story, he looks so much like my Lucy that I had to contact Jacquie because I was jealous of whomever was getting to foster him! He is still with his Doodle Daddy until he is placed. Whoever gets him is going to be one lucky person! I sure hope it is someone on DK or someone willing to join.

If anyone is interested in him and needs any help he is only a couple hours from me!
Yes, I agree. Backer is incredibly special, and I am in love with him. If only I wasn't in this condo, I would be begging Jacquie right now, and packing for a "road trip" to Ohio...just in case. I told my DH at dinner to say his prayers tonight in thanks for the "two dog condo rule".
YES! DOODLES ARE SPECIAL!

I say this all the time to people. I've never had a dog that even compared to my doodle dog. With
other dogs I have had...they were sweet, goofy, funny and all that...but I didnt have a "connection" with
them like I do with Trev. I believe he "gets" me...almost to the point of being telepathic. Sometimes, I
think he can read my mind. =) His eyes connect with mine when I talk to him. Previous dogs may have briefly
looked at my eyes but usually it was b/c food was involved - though most of the time they had a "duh" look on
their face. lol. I can tell Trev is constantly thinking...he will intently focus on me as I talk to him and sometimes
if he doesnt understand what I say he will tilt his head and give me a "Whatcha talkin bout Willis" look. LOL! He is definitely the smartest dog I have ever had. Trev has had a lot of training and I think training has built a
foundation for constructive use of his intelligence. Sometimes, I wonder if he would be as "special" if he didnt have all the training. He would still be smart ... but he might be hell on 4 paws too. I also think all the training has bonded us closer too. I dont think I could ever love another dog as much as I love Trev, but I would absolutely 100% get another doodle. They are the BEST!
Jane I totally agree with you. We have had dogs for 40 yrs. different breeds at different times, but there is definately something about this breed that is very special...Our Austrailian Shep. is 14 yrs old, and is a wonderful smart loving dog, but of all the dogs that we have had, this doodle has captured my heart...I love my Aussie, and we got Oliver for him to have a pal, after losing his 13 yr old brother, so we were new to the doodle breed, but I would have another doodle in a heartbeat, if I could, we can't only can have 2 dogs a home here, but we are just thrilled with our Oliver and we look for other doodles wherever we go...
Too bad you have a 2 dog limit! Seeing that you have an australian shepherd... you could have tried an aussiedoodle next like Tori! LOL How is Oliver doing???
