I've gotten such helpful information here - thanks so much! So in our continuing quest to figure out which way to go, I'm wondering if in general, poodles easier to train than doodles? I'm sure it varies from dog to dog, but what's your experience out there, poodle owners and doodle owners? I've just read a recent discussion on training doodles and now I'm wondering if it might be more challenging than I originally thought...thanks again!!!
I think your advice is right on Natasha. Also, standard poodles are one of the best hunting dogs int he world. They can have a strong prey drive. I notice that the prey drive seems to increase as they get older. When I didn't know that, My very calm well trained service dog started, in her later years, chasing cars & ultimately was hit & instantly killed. She also hated to retire from service. She made the most heart wrenchiing sounds when the younger dog took over the service responsibilities. I am noticing the same thing wi my poodle now. I am really hoping to find someone to taker her out on therapy gigs. She really needs a job. She hates being retired. She loves training. especially clicker training. I think the most important thing to consider wi any dog especially large ones, is that you must plan to devote some time every day to training, & excersing. A large dog can be your greates asset or untrained, your greates liability. The good news is you can train a dog in 10 to 15 minutes per day. See www.clickertraining.com . If they come to your city be sure to attend their seminars. BTW, Nancy, where do you live. If you are in San Diego, you can take Karma out. She will make a fantastic therapy dog & you'd get to experienced a very laid back & well trained standard poodle. If your in another city, maybe put an ad up on Craigs List. Offer free pet sitting for a weekend on all the various breeds yor considering so you get to experience them. Be sure to post the results. I'd love to hear. Puppy love from JOy & furry folk
For some reason this discussion has suddenly popped back up, but it is 6 months old. I'm guessing that by now, the original poster has made a choice, lol.
