Unbelievable!  I have heard it before but never had to deal with it.  Polly just went out and pooped and before I could get across the yard to pick it up she started to eat it, ugh!  The yard is sizable and I am old enough that running just isn't going to work.  As I hurry toward her she knows she is going to lose it so she tries to grab and run.  HELP!  I need to stop this quickly...no more kisses for me today.

A lot of people think coprophagia in dogs is due to a deficiency in the diet, but that's been shown to be untrue, at least in dogs who are eating an AAFCO approved commercial diet which supplies all of the nutrients a dog needs. Green beans are a great way to add bulk without calories to a dog's diet, but they don't really supply any nutrients for dogs other than fiber. Pineapple contains bromelain, which supposedly makes the poop unappealing to them so they won't eat it; you can also buy bromelain products to add to the dog's food. I know several people who have tried it without success. It certainly doesn't hurt to try it, though.

Great information. Thanks for sharing.
Pretty disgusting...and fairly common. They do sell a product, a powder that is mixed with their food, that makes their poop taste bad! Really? Even typing that, seems bizarre...but, it does work. Had a girlfriend whose puppy did this from the very start. Good news is, she finally broke the habit with the help of the powder( sorry, I haven't a clue what it is called, but I know Petco sold it) and cleaning up any poos pronto!

FYI

Excellent article!

A lot of the products sold to prevent poop-eating contain monosodium glutamate, so it's important to check the labels.

I just emailed my friend to ask what product she used. Her reply: she doesn't remember. She tried 3 or 4 before finding one that appeared to work, but that was a few years back and the dog has outgrown the habit long ago. AND, she did not buy it at Petco, but bought on line. Sorry!

I have never had to deal with that, but the long leash sounds like a great plan!  Get her back to you the minute she goes and tell her to leave it!  Then give her a treat!

Oh, Judy, I feel your pain! Flash is a poop-eater and I have tried every product on the market with no success. Just when I think something may be working, he'll prove to me that it's not. Fortunately, it's not an every day event anymore and he does not have any interest in Knox's or Courtney's poop, just his own. I wish I had some advice to pass along, but I don't : (

Your experiences with Flash are how I learned that the pineapple & Forbid stuff don't work, lol. :)

I've heard of people using hot sauce to stop chewing so maybe if you pour hot sauce on the poo it will lose it's appeal. Of course that would involve letting her sample some. :>)
