Charli was born in an Amish Puppy Mill. Born with an umbilical cord hernia, she would have been destroyed since she was no good to Pet Land - 'damaged goods'. His PMer surrendered her to a rescue - which is trully incredible and lucky for us!!

I was told she was 10 weeks old but I don't believe it. I think she was closer to 6 weeks when I adopted her. She was about 9" long and weighed 7lbs. A year later she is over 27" tall!!

This is her PetFinder picture - I know - how could you not fall in love! Check out those blue eyes.

Here she is today - her eyes are black - that brown on her muzzle is after playing the mud in the yard before her bath.

So back to the question, at what age do puppy's eyes change color. I am trying to figure out how old she probably was when she adopted us.

So I was wrong once again with the above comment. We live and learn sometimes more that once.
Okay :)
I agree with Tara, it was most likely the reflection. I'm not 100% sure but believe that all black dogs are born with black eyes.
I do not think it is hair /fur color but rather the color pigment of the skin. Spud's father was a Black poodle. If he is shaved down he looks like a Dalmatian. He has many patches of black skin but most of his skin is Pink but all over he has a white coat no matter what the coloring is at the skin.
Yes, but black poodles have dark eyes from birth, too. There may be a bluish cast the first few days due to that milky covering when they're born, but if you look at a truly blue-eyed dog like a husky when it's a puppy, you'll see the difference in appearance.
Karen - they were never that blue like a husky - though wouldn't that have been just gorgeous! they were more navy blue.
Spud photographed with blue eyes however he had green eyes until 3 months old or so even though............... he has a black nose not the rose colored that typically has green/blue eyes according to genetics--there is an explanation around DK somewhere about how this works . If I find it I will post it here but for now I have to go out to dinner. It is worth reading and very interesting how this works
But now, at times, Spud's eyes are very deep forest green. Not always. It is almost like my oldest son who has brown and green eyes depending on clothing and lightening.
SPUD with blue eyes
He no longer photographs with blue eyes.

It is what is called pigment that determines the eye color in labradoodles, at least.. Pigment is the color of the nose and the skin lining around the eyes, lip rims, and on the pads of a dog's paws. The pups often have lighter noses when they are born but by a few weeks the black noses are looking very black. I think the eyes may gradually get darker too. Black dogs like Charli always ave black pigment. I always look to one breeder for following color changes in pups because she documents every litter from the beginning and weekly thereafter through 8 weeks.

By 2 weeks, when the eyes are first open, these pups look like the eyes are dark to me.By three weeks you can really see the difference between the cream pup, who has a rose nose, and the black pups.
She did have dark blue eyes when I got her. I just don't remember when they changed. At least several weeks.

So i guess from what I am reading, the eye color change won't give me what I need to know. Boo hoo!!
She's a .great doodle. What's a few weeks really? And she's still young enough to think inflating her age is a good thing. Little does she know...
Thanks F - she really is a fantastic doodle! A typical goofy, silly, sweet, loving and coming into her 'adult' personality and she is a riot!

I know it is just a few weeks but because she was so young to be taken from her mom and siblings, to be spayed and her hernia fixed before I got her. I just can't get it out of my head they all this was done to her so young. IF she was indeed 9.5 weeks when I got her, that means she was spayed at 8.5 weeks and IF I am right, it was done when she was 5-6 weeks old. Either way it was much too young and I am just fixated on it.
