i have thought that too...i have seen the adoption fee's as high as $750.00 and i think that IS an awful lot of money for a dog that you don't know anything about....i remember when i was little we got our first dog from a shelter...the fee was $30.00 and we went home with everything...food,a collar & leash, he had all of his shots & i believe he was fixed....but times are tough, and i think i read, and someone correct me if i am wrong, that they charge more for the "pure bred" & mixes everyone wants....ex. doodles) because they know they can get it..because if you were to go to a breeder it would cost twice as much).
that way there is extra money to care for the more un-adoptable pups.
you would think that just offering to take the pup for a min.fee is how it should be!!!....but there are other dogs to feed & bills to pay...i guess??
The average adoption fee for a young healthy doodle in our area (IL-WI) runs between 250-450. A lot of private shelters (those with an actual facility)as well as rescues, will charge slightly more for a very desirable doodle (i.e. fluffy non-shed coat, no issues, etc) than they do for dogs who may be harder to place. Some rescues base the adoption fee, in part, on the age of the dog, i.e. puppies @ 300, adult dogs @ 250, dogs over 5 yrs @ 200, and many have a "seniors for seniors" program, in which they allow a senior citizen to adopt a senior (over 7 ) dog for no adoption fee at all, and assistance with medical costs for the life of the dog, just to get the dog into a safe home for his remaining years. At A.D.O.P.T. where I got Jack, the standard adoption fee for adult dogs at the time was $200. Jack was "priced" at $300. The higher adoption fees on some dogs offset the costs of medical treatment for other dogs who may have special needs. Rural kill shelters throughout the country may charge as little as $40 to adopt a dog. It depends, in part, on the homeless population and the demand in a particular area.
Fluffy Dog Rescue in WI does have higher than usual fees on many of their dogs, particularly, their doodles. This particular "rescue" is one sole woman with no organization or funding behind her, only a network of not-enough foster homes, and she accepts dogs who are transported up from southern kill shelters, primarily in Alabama. Her overhead is higher than average; I have seen the adoption fees on her dogs come down if the dog has been with her for a longer-than-normal period of time. her operating budget is entirly dependent on adoption fees, and donations, which are limited, as she is not a big or well-known organization.
