I was wondering how a breeder can advertise that a puppy is going to be "auctioned off to a wonderful home" at a fund raiser? I have rescued an acutioned dog in the past and the "highest bidder" was a terrible dog owner. Our rescue was a labrador auctioned at a duck banquet and was shot, starved ,and not given shelter. I think auctions for dogs at fund raisers should be banned. People have to much to drink and see a cute puppy and do not stop to think about the responsibilities involved in having a new puppy. Any comments or experience with this situation?
I agree! WITHOUT the option to have the same level of screening and option to TURN DOWN the buyer...it would be really risky and not so ethical. Did you see Rachel's answer above?...sounds like on occasion, depending on the auction, some breeders can exert normal screening.
But yeah...without that...it is just a bad road to go on.
I donate a puppy each year to the Rally foundation here in Ga. Sponcered by the Atlanta Braves. Monies collected go to pediatric cancer research...My daughter is a 16 year brain tumor survivior so this is dear to my heart, she was diagnosed at 8 years old. This is the way I do my donation.
1. I bring an adult demo dog to the event NO PUPPIES! Too stressful, to much danger of disease etc on the pup. My adults love the attention plus it gives families an idea what the coat and the disposition of the adult dogs are.
2. I create a basket of SCL goodies that I send home with the family that wins, and inside the basket is a gift cirtificate for one puppies from one my future litters.
3. The winning family must come and meet me and the doodles and then we get together and deside what litter, size color is right for that family and then the waiting begins.....
4. They are placed on my list like everyone else.....must fill out a puppy application etc......
I've attached some fun pics from the rallys...and yes that is Chipper Jones of the Atlanta Braves with my Dancer. He won 2 of my puppies at this years acution, don't know when he plans on collecting but he dontated 10,000 to Rally on my dogs behalf so whenever he is ready we will try to be......:)
Carol does it right!
We were at one of the duck banquets many years ago where a puppy was raffled off as well as other items. We won a print. The person who won the puppy was kind enough to realize that they didn't want the responsibility of a new puppy complete with professional training as part of the prize. He approached my husband and offered a trade. Needless to say we jumped at the chance to get our children a puppy since we had recently lost our yellow lab. At least that story ended well.
