Maggie is 5 mos old and sleeps in her crate at night with no noises. I ran into my neighbor who lives downstairs from me, and she says that Maggie is constantly crying/whining/barking after I leave for work every day. I leave the TV on for her during the day and her crate has comfort things in for her. The crate is located in the living/dining room and I have an open concept kitchen/dining/living room....any suggestions?

Thank you all!

How long are you gone for? Can you exercise her more before you go so that she is tired and will sleep longer? I highly recommend Susan Garrett's Crate Games DVD for training your dog to love their crate.
I think Stella asked the same question I was about to, how long does Maggie stay in her crate without a potty break? If it's over a couple hours you may want to have someone come in and get her out to exercise and go potty. I have a 5 month and a 6 month old doodle, still don't leave them crated during the day more than a couple hours, I am fortunate and don't work any more so likely not the same situation but my 5 month old still needs to go out every couple hours to ensure no accidents in the house. Good luck, Maggie is adorable!

Maggie stays in her crate from 730-1130...My dad comes over and walks her at 1130...she never has to go potty at that time - she just plays for an hour...then my dad puts her back in her crate and then I am at 4:00 pm and she's out of her crate until 9 pm...does that help?

Hi Debbie, it sounds like Maggie is getting out of her crate and exercising, obviously getting acces to water during the day. Stella mentioned a DVD that may help, otherwise I haven't had experience with crating a pup during the day for extended periods, even now it's for shorter periods and I have 2 so I think they are more comfortable and don't seem to have separation anxiety when I leave. Not sure if it's possible but if you have a doggie day care near you it might be worth checking them out and see if Maggie could go a couple days a week, that might get her more exercise and may even help with the separation anxiety. I know this is stressful and wish you the best of luck, keep us posted on Maggie's progress.

Hi Judi!

Thank you for your reply! On Monday this week, I ended up putting a few gates across the dining room area into the living room and when I leave for work in the morning, I let Maggie hang out in the kitchen dining area with access to her open crate...I checked with the neighbors on Monday and Tuesday and they said that they hadn't heard a peep....so, hoping when I go home tonight she was quiet again...if she was, then I may have found the solution!!! fingers crossed!

Debbie

That is wonderful news!! Maybe she just needed that bit of extra space to stretch out, I'm sure it's a relief to you as well!

It is! She managed to open one of the gates yesterday and when I came home she greeted me at the door...Hmmm...=) Anyway, she was a good girl...nothing was disturbed and she didn't potty anywhere in the house...my fingers are still crossed lol

Debbie,
We kept trying Yogi in a crate and he hated it. Tried the bathroom gated, he hated it. DH thought to try gating in the kitchen which is where he likes to relax and chill by the doors. Viola! Now he just relaxes and sleeps while we are away. DH also left him out some in the house. He does great. Maybe our dogs have confinement issues.
Glad things are better for you now!
Wow, what a good girl she is! She looks a lot like my Barkley, he's just over 6 months and is an F1 medium doodle, I think he would be ok to be left alone in the house but his half brother Oscar (3 weeks younger than Barkley) is an absolute terror..lol I look forward to being able to let them stay out of their crates when we are out for a while but so far they like their crates and it will be quite a whole before Oscar aka Shredder can be left unsupervised!

Thank you guys for your responses...Maggie will be 6 mos old May 1st...she's so much happier not crated during the day...do you guys think its terrible to let her out of crate/confinement during the day? She wouldn't have access to the bedrooms/bathrooms or den...the only think I can think of that she might hurt herself with would be the three electrical cords - otherwise, I can't think of anything that may hurt her...thoughts????

My other thought is to not crate her at night - and just crate during the day? I am thinking she was being crated too long...

Debbie

Yogi is free in my room at night, but he mainly sleeps in my bed with me, then when he is left alone he is now gated into kitchen. Sounds like a good solution for you too.

Leslie,

=) I am thinking that this might be the perfect solution!!! I will try that this weekend to see if it works.
