Canal Fulton is 15 minutes from my home but Cincinnati is 5.5 hours away.  Recognize the symptoms and get help right away.  For me, I may have waited until the next day to seek help.  Bloody diarrhea is common in parasites and I may have just thought my dog caught something and gone in the next day carrying my stool sample.

CANAL FULTON, OH (WOIO) -

Experts are still trying to get to the bottom of what killed three dogs at a the Pet Spot in Cincinnati.  The dogs were extremely lethargic, had bloody diarrhea and were vomiting. Some may have thought what happened at the Pet Spot was an isolated incident, but in just the past week, four dogs with similar gastrointestinal symptoms showed up at the Elm Ridge Animal Hospital in Canal Fulton.

Dr. Melanie Butera says the dogs she treated had the same symptoms as the ones in Cincinnati.  One even died.

The illness comes on fast.  Some dogs survive, but it's important to get medical help as soon as your dog is showing signs of possibly having the sickness.

"There is no next day with this. The dogs can do down hill within 48 hours, so we are just urging people, if your dog acts sick, to go to your vet especially if you start to see vomiting or bloody diarrhea," says Dr. Butera.

Dr. Butera says the problem may be more widespread than originally thought.  She says other veterinarians in the Canal Fulton area have also reported seeing dogs with symptoms of the mystery illness.

There is a news video attached but it wont embed.  It is in the link above

Seems the information is vague. Never mentions a connection to a food product, a day care, a dog park?   So, just a warning

This is scary. Seems like we just recently heard about something similar. I hope they get to the bottom of this and no more dogs become ill.

Yes, we did here on DK.  A dog passed with no explanation in Wisconsin

Bothers me too especially when NO other information or connection is mentioned.

There was also a situation in North Carolina where 4 dogs died who were together at a day care.  At first they thought is was Iams Dog Food but I think that was ruled out.

All had bloody diarrhea.

I might have been thinking of that case. Very sad.

Here's an article saying that the dogs in Cincinnati and the dogs in NC all ate the same food:

Weird that both cases involved doggy day cares, too. That makes me think this is a contagious disease that has nothing to do with food.

MedVet says throughout the course of the testing, veterinarians at Ohio State University found what is called avascular necrosis, or destruction of the blood vessels. They also looked for bacteria and fungus and have found none so far. Meanwhile, veterinarians have asked experts at Ohio State University to help figure out what caused these dogs to die.

I wonder how they got the avascular necrosis .. that is weird... avascular necrosis would prevent blood flow to certain areas.. I have only ever heard of it in joint disease but I guess if you had it else where your organs would die from not getting blood supply.....

You all are freaking me out to go let Jack and Molly get their teeth cleaned now.... I don't wan them anywhere where a bunch of dogs have been.. uggg

I think there was a puppy "ringo" on GD page on Facebook that passed after boarding!  It is all very scary.  The place in Cincinnati actually reopened this week even though it still hasn't been determined what the illness was.

There's a bad strain of canine influenza that has killed 6 dogs in MD this past week. I wonder if this is related to that?

Karen do you vaccinate Jack against influenza? Our vet just called and asked me about that because Jack and Molly go in for their dental on Thursday, I said no, now I am reconsidering.

He gets the parainfluenza vaccine intranasally with his bordatella, but I'm not sure it's the same thing.
