Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Here is an odd question, but I need to get a new car and am also waiting for the arrival of my new fantastic Standard English Goldendoodle (YAY!!). So here is my question - what kind of car is working or not for a dog that size? Do I need a small SUV (I am thinking for his crate?) or just a roomy hatchback? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks doodle community!!

I recently got a Subaru Outback and their motto is "Dog Tested, Dog Approved". I have ZERO complaints. It's a wonderful car and I used to drive an Escalade.
My girls wear Champion K9 Harness/tether systems.
Thanks, Kate. I need to get harnesses eventually, too, so that is a good tip. I will check out the Subaru.
PS...I have two Labradoodles, a large Standard and a Medium, plus I usually have a carseat in the car too.
I fit Ollie in a 2.5 door Saturn ...even his crate. That being said I recently got a Chevy Sonic hatchback and it has a little more room which is awesome. I think your pup will be okay in any size car (an SUV or hatchback does have it's perks though)
That is good to hear, that you can fit a crate into the Saturn. I think I am most concerned about the crate. I am leaning towards more room, but not a full SUV.
Check out the Chevy Sonic hatchback. It is a great crossover car and gets 34 miles/gal. I love it.
What a great advertisement, Rachel! I'll have to tell Tim what a happy customer you are : )
It was a great choice! Ollie fits perfect and so will anything else that I want to pack up and adventure around with, but it's still small and zippy...like me!
I have a Honda CRV...even though I don't crate my two doodles in the car, a crate would easily fit in the back. The car is great if it's just me driving, with the dogs in the back seat. If my grandkids are in the back seat & the dogs are in the cargo area, the car is too small ! The kids have backpacks, jackets, etc. & it makes the car shrink...
I've been thinking of getting one of those when our baby arrives.. I'll have to thoroughly investigate the size of the trunk ;)
We only have one doodle though and she is a mini!
We have two grandkids, too, so maybe that size is a bit small. Good to know
I am in Australia so not sure if my car is over in the US but I have a Nissan X-trail which is a small SUV and is fantastic. It does not have any carpet, it is all plastic lined (including the back section) which is fantastic for having wet, muddy dogs in the back. It is so easy to clean. My standard sized doodle jumps in the back himself but I lift the medium size in :)
