My 4 month old puppy had persistent diarrhea, was treated for Giardia, and is now being treated with Albon and Prescription ID canned food. He is doing much better and I was told by the vet that I need to gradually introduce a Lamb and Rice diet. My question is which one? I have heard good things about the Canidae and Kirklands brand at Cosco. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I've been happily using Canidae for probably a year or so... if that makes any difference. Even through the formula change my dogs have done fine on it.
Hi Nancy,
Although I do use a commercially prepared dry dog food (lamb and rice),
I also prepare my dog's food.
Here's the recipe; I think you could easily modify it for your pup.
Premium Rice or Arborio (about 1/2 cup dry) cook as directed - while rice is still hot, add one egg and mix.
*Chicken Livers (I cook about a lb in 2 tbp olive oil) , cut into very small pieces - I also add a little water at the end for a tasty broth.
*Chicken - cook either 1 breast or 2 thighs - I cut it into very small pieces.
Peas or Carrots or both (cook about 1 cup) - retain a little water (vitamins) to add to broth.
Bacon (optional) - about 3 slices, cut into small pieces.
The broth can be added to the final mix.
* relatively inexpensive!
OK that's it - mix it all together. I put a container in the fridge for the current week and a container in the freezer for next week. I do put a label on it, b/c it tends to look a bit like stuffing. :-) It's good, but not everyone likes liver.
I know it sounds like a bit of trouble to make, but then you know what the pup's getting.
For the pup, I think the first time I'd leave out the peas and/or carrots until the diarrhea is controlled.
My guys have been on Canidae for years, I love it and they do too...I don't know about Kirkland brand, but I do know that Canidae is a very good food...We have been using it for about 10 yrs now with no problems, and they were one of the very few that when they had the problem with the stuff coming from China, that they did not use any chinese "stuff" in their foods. They are a good company, look them up on the net...It will also tell you where u can buy their product near you...
