Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hi,
We've never had a puppy this big before (Riley is 37 lbs at ~19 weeks...) and teething is coming along nicely.
She has a number of chew toys for supervised chewing and play time:
- Split deer antler
- Yak cheese (a big one!)
- Miscellaneous stuffed toys and rubber toys
and toys for when we are not home:
- Large kongs
- Durabone nylabone
Her teeth seem to be really bothering her lately so I was hoping to find something that might help relieve some of the discomfort. With Luna we froze wet kitchen washcloths and let her chew those (supervised) but I have a feeling Riley would shred them inside 30 seconds because she's so strong.
Any suggestions for our big pup and her sore teeth? :) Bonus if she can be left alone with it when we're not home!
DH was saying he thinks she'd like something softer (like one of the more rubbery nylabones) but we can't leave her with those unsupervised. She chewed part of our baseboards in her gated-off area while I was at work yesterday, her teeth must be really sore :/

So far so good yeah. It looks like one of her adult canines might be coming in beside the baby canine, hopefully the baby tooth falls out soon. Frozen washcloths worked wonders for Luna I should set some up for Riley.
The canines were the problem for Jasper. The baby teeth were never going to fall out on their own, and if the new ones start coming in, they come in at the wrong angle and the whole bite can be ruined, and not just cosmetically. Look at the roots on those two canines!
Oh my goodness! Those are LONG roots!
The premolars I've seen come out for Riley (I've only found 2 teeth) looked like that bottom one. Roots gone, just the tooth and some jagged edges.
That's how they're supposed to look, and that's how they fall out; no long root keeping them anchored into the gums, lol.
We're going to call the vet when they open Monday.. had a good look at Riley's mouth and her adult canines are coming down even though her baby canines aren't loose as far as I can tell. Hopefully they don't have to be removed but better call just in case.
She has also lost all 4 premolars and I thought those fell out AFTER the canines so something is up. There is plenty of room because her jaw is so big but we'll see what vet says.
I agree, you should call the vet and probably have him take a look. My vet kind of pooh-poohed my concerns over the phone, but once he looked at Jasper's mouth and felt how firmly embedded those canines were and how far out the new ones were, he said we should schedule surgery ASAP.
Some good news - she finally settled down a bit for the evening and her canines are definitely a bit loose. I couldn't get a good grip on them earlier because she's normally so wiggly :p
We'll definitely call anyway and try to get her in ASAP but hopefully they're just being a bit stubborn and are on their way out.
That sounds like a good plan.
Called the vet - they said not to worry about it they'll just remove them when she is spayed in a couple months if they're still there. I guess they're more in the "wait and see" camp. They did say if she's having discomfort from the double set to bring her in but otherwise just watch and wait.
The part of that that bothers me is if the permanent teeth come in in the wrong place.
Well, one of them just came out playing tug, hopefully the rest will be out soon:p poor thing that's her 5th tooth this week lol
