I came home from work and Monty was obsessed with the cold wood stove. DH said he was sure a bird had gotten into the chimney. Monty was obsessed with looking into the stove. I opened the door, started shaking the smoke screen above and letting the creosote fall into the stove, nothing. He kept sticking his head in, no, no, no dont do that, no worries Monty. Well holy cow I got to looking and here was a poor bird hiding in the corner. I grabbed him with both hands and took him outside. Monty followed and watched as I released that poor bird. The bird was fine and flew to the trees and soon after flew away. But this poor dog is a mess. Soon afterwards I started to build a fire and he is pacing and huffing and puffing and sticking his head in the stove! no matter how often and what I tell him, he is very worried about what is in the stove. I now have a fire and he is so worried. I have some pics on my cell phone dont know how to load them at the moment, but he's so pitiful. He seen me rescue the bird and set him free but still he worries. when I get a chance to download the pics to computer, i'll post them.
sigh. let us do Friday night now, been a long week.
so now i find out that my dad had the same situation earlier today. he too rescued a bird that fell into the stove via the stove pipe. it was a blue bird that he set free. No wonder that Monty is upset,2 birds in the same afternoon.

Im sorry. I'm sure this is upsetting,Sharon. Poodles are bird dogs too, so may be part of the reason.
Do you have chimney caps? If not, get them to tomorrow. Very first thing I did to this house even before I moved in.
yes we have a chimney cap but it is open on the sides. Monty is still watching the stove this morning, but he's much calmer than last evening. I guess in his mind the birds magically appeared inside the stove. lol
My dogs would be hoping for a roast bird dinner!
I hate when they get fixated on something. Hopefully, he forgets about it soon.
Poor Monty! Maybe when the fire removes any trace of the scent he will realize there is nothing to worry about. I hope so!
Poor Monty. Yes, chimney caps save a world of trouble.
We have a chimney cap on ours, but still get an occasional visitor stuck. Some of these birds are no bigger than my thumb - makes a whole lot of noise - but it beats a bat in the house any day.
