Finally, after two agonizingly long years of unemployment, my DH was offered a postion in Boston!  I am going home to the East coast, a dream I have had since we moved to MN.  Nothing against MN, but I missed my friends and the coast terribly.  He leaves soon and I will remain here with the children to sell the house--so not looking forward to that invasion of privacy but a necessary evil and my eye is on the prize.

So, all you Bostonians, we need to be close (less than 20 miles) to Boston center and I was wondering if you might have any suggestions about great towns for us to look into.  So far, at least on the internet, I am looking at Hull, Lynn, Malden and Hingham.  I am researching Catholic schools and, of course, I need a great vet, too.  Of all the things to miss about MN, I will be losing an amazing vet/grooming/boarding group.  :(

Thanks to all who listened to me bemoan our plight over the past two years.  I appreciate the support!

No recommendations but a great big congratulations!!!  Great to hear good news.

Once you get the public transit system down, Massachusetts is really quite easy to get around.  The commuter rail is extensive and the subway system covers all the major parts of Boston and nearby communities.  I live in Attleboro (near the Rhode Island border) and work in Boston (in the financial district).  It is a 50 minute train ride each way, but it sure beats being stuck in traffic on the Expressway.  And as others have mentioned the farther out from Boston you get, the more reasonable the house prices and cost of living are.  Hingham, Cohasset, Hull, Quincy, Milton, Randolf, Dedham, Westwood, Dover, Framingham, Natick, Belmont, Waltham, Wellsley, Weston, Lexington, Concord, Burlington are all good areas close to the city, but if you want to relax your budget a little you might want to also consider Sharon, Norwood, Middleboro, Lakeville, Mansfield, or Franklin.  All are on the commuter rail line and provide easy access to Boston.  Good Luck!

This is such great news....congratulations!  I'm in CT so I can't help much with information on specific towns.  We do love Boston and try to spend at least one long weekend there each year.  I'm excited for you and your family.

Yay!! So glad to hear the good news!! You are going to be a busy girl the next couple of months! Glad things are looking up for you and your family!
Congratulations! So happy things are looking up!

Hi,

We live in Needham and highly recommend it as a terrific place to live.  The public schools are excellent and there are several parochial schools in the area.  Needham has a commuter rail that goes right into Boston, and by car, it's about 30 minutes away without traffic.  It's a excellent community in which to raise children and the town forest is a fun place to take dogs.  Needham is right near Newton, Wellesley and Natick -- all desirable places to live.

The towns that you mentioned are more towards the south shore.  Of them, Hingham is very nice.

Good luck in your search and in your move!

I love Boston.  My husband is from a little town called Winthrop, on the beach, close to the airport.  His family lived in Lynn when I met him.  My sister in law still lives there, in Melrose.  Lots of nice towns there and very many catholic communities.  I would have moved there in a heart beat if my husband ever wanted to go back.  Good luck to you and congratulations!
