and now I think he's feeling "off" to say the least.  On Saturday, my husband spent 10 hours slow smoking a pork butt.  The hubby and h is friends ate what they wanted and then returned to the kitchen to find Brinkley far reaching his doodle body so he could get to the remainder of the pulled pork.  Hubby put it up higher than normal but this was one determined doodle!!  Like I said, this happened Saturday-- it's now Tuesday and he really doesn't want to eat much. Is this normal this late in the game?  He seems a little sluggish but he'll heat a treat... he'll eat cheese... but he didn't want his food this morning.  He's seems more low key than normal-- sleeping more- but he still has pep when he's up.  

 

He's pooping smaller logs (sorry TMI) than normal but he's still going.  We leave for a cruise on Friday morning and I really am hoping this is something that passes quickly and that it isn't more than an upset tummy. Would he still be feeling off three days later.  Last night was the first time we realized he was feeling off.

That is exactly how we manage with our dogs when we go away. I am so glad Brinkley can stay at home with a trusted friend while he recuperates and you enjoy your trip!

Oh my goodness! I am so happy to hear that he is being treated and you are not going to have worry hanging over your head on your cruise. Phew! I am grateful every day for DK!

Wow!    I'm so glad you caught this Heather.    Thanks for sharing, hoping this experience alerts all of us to how serious this kind of thing can be.    I for one never knew a dog could get seriously ill from eating meat that we could eat.   Hope you have a wonderful cruise!

wow, that sounds like quite the scare. Good for you for figuring it out and getting him to the vet early. DK to the rescue once again!

Seriously, I don't know what I would do if I didn't have DK (and Karen of course), I would be worried and wondering all of the time, not to mention all of the Vet visits.

As it happen, Daisy has been pretty healthy but if I have a question I can always count on DK.

I am so glad that Brinkley's shenanigans was thwarted in time....hopefully he feels better soon.

Oh and what a great thing to have your pet sitter that is awesome.

Heather, Please update us on Brinkley. I know dogs are never supposed to eat pork.  Don't you wish they could associate their bad behavior with the consequences? I doubt he will avoid pork from now on because his tummy is upset. boo  :o(

It's not so much that dogs can't eat pork, it's the amount and the fat content. A small amount of lean pork without any seasonings or visible fat is fine for dogs. If Brinkley had eaten an equal amount of an equally fatty cut of beef, he'd be having the same problem.

And of course, dogs will be dogs. They're going to eat yummy smelling food if they can. We can't depend on them not to take meat (or any food) that is within their reach. It's up to us to keep anything that might hurt them out of reach, just like with children.

Thank you so much for clarifying that for me, Karen. I pretty much eat only fish and chicken so the pork is not an issue for our dogs, but it is good to know that it is the seasoning and fat content to watch out for.

Yes one of Peri's fave Fromm flavors is Pork & Applesauce.  Just don't go feeding your dood bacon!

And quantity plays a major role in this. If Brinkley really ate half the pork, that's 3 and a half lbs. Three and a half lbs of anything is way too much for any dog (or person, for that matter) to be eating at one time. Even one lb is a huge amount.

It's like how a piece of cheese to us is nothing, but they say if a dog eats a piece of cheese, it's like us eating a Big Mac.
