Carrots are great for all dogs and very healthy! As for the choking part, Bella pretty much eats slowly so I am not that worried about her choking on one. To help prevent choking, give bigger pieces, or a full (smaller) carrot, because they have to take time to eat it.

I hope that helps:)

Actually, Sam, raw carrots have almost no nutritional value for dogs (and not all that much for humans) because the cells are plant cellulose which is indigestible. When you cook them, that breaks down the cell walls and makes the nutrients available.

Interesting... I didn't know that!  I think you should make a food education group:)

I try to do that in The Food Group, lol.

I wasn't thinking about nutrition... I was thinking about something to chew on instead of me.

Have you tried bully sticks?

If you mean raw carrots, they are indigestible anyway, so no reason to give them, lol. The nutrients are only available if they are cooked enough that the plant cellulose is broken down. They aren't harmful, but there are lots of better treat ideas in The Food Group.

We've tried giving Jack a raw baby carrot from time to time, and he has no idea that it's something you eat. He seems to think it's some kind of small toy. :-)

Ha! That's adorable. Give him a pet for me.

Will do! :D

They are safe...and safer than eating sticks outside ;-0
My dogs LOVE carrots.  They will eat carrot shavings, carrot ends, carrot anything.
They also love asparagus.  Maybe not super nutritive, but still safe.

Definitely safe, and definitely better than sticks. :)

Hi Mary, join the Food Group here on DK! We have recommended food brand and treat brand lists and the answers to just about every question you could have about feeding your dog. And lots of people "pick my brain" there, lol.

My dog has some serious health issues, including Inflammatory Bowel Disease, so what I feed is governed by those limitations. :)
