Hi,

Nala is due for her vet visit and I am wondering which vaccines your dogs get yearly.  I know some vary by region, but overall which are the core vaccines you let your dog get.  Nala is 2 btw.

Thanks so much,

Some good info on leptospirosis in dogs (which will clearly show you why many people opt to give the vaccine):

Oh, and for any dog who ever spends any time in natural bodies of water (lakes, ponds, rivers, oceans, streams, etc), the lepto vaccine is strongly recommended.

My puppy received the lepto as his second round of shots and he had an allergic reaction to it he was running everywhere and desperately scratching his face in the couch, he floor, and grass so next time he goes they said they would medicate him before giving him the shots

You were lucky; that's a very mild reaction. I know of one 14 mo old puppy who had such a severe reaction, he almost didn't survive it.

I would really strongly suggest that next time around, you do not give the lepto vaccine with any other vaccines, medicated or not.

My guys get rabies every three years, DA2PP every five years, and Lepto shot and Bordatella (intranasally) annually. I live in an area with raccoons, and they swim in beaver ponds so for us Lepto is essential.

My one dog did have a vaccine reaction one year. But I don't know which one it was to, as it didn't become apparent until a few days later - he developed a red welt where he had the shot on his back leg, then the hair in that area all fell out. It took months to grow back, and now (seven years later) he has a growth in that same area.

Our Jake had a vaccine reaction and so we have opted to do titers yearly.

We do give the intranasal bordatella yearly.

I also did titers with Jack, and sometimes, you don't even have to do them every year, depending on the level of immunity.

I do titers with Bailey as well.  She is 6 years old and has shown immunity each year since she had her round of vaccinations as a puppy.  She does get rabies shots and bordetella on a regular basis.

Thanks so much for all the info! Nala did get her 3 yr rabies shot as well as a 3 year shot I think the one Karen is describing. ( It was last January.  Not given at the same time)  I’m going to look up Nala’s record.  The vet sent a card stating she is due for her annual visit and on there it lists getting a lepto shot.  I will continue to read up on this before I opt to get it for her.

Thanks so much

The only annual shot my dogs get is the Bordatella - they still catch it, but I've been told that having had the shot lessens the severity if they do catch it.   Kind of like us an flu shots.   I am still debating whether to give them the canine flu shot.

Oops!  Bordatella is not a shot so I should have said the only immunizations.

Unless I'm totally crazy, I think that an injectable bordatella vaccine exists in addition to the nasal spray. I wonder if it's the same as the old flu mist - the difference is live vs inactive virus. And I swear the vet tech told me that it was good for a year instead of 6 months. But the doggy daycare didn't care and wanted it every six months anyway. Bordatella is the one I find most frustrating. There are occasionally places we can't go because I can't bring myself to give them bordatella twice a year.
