my new puppy, home 2 days, now made this funny sound this morning. sounded like he had something caught in his throat and kept trying to cough it up. he has not left home except for a trip to the vet yesterday. everything was fine. at the vet, i was the only one in the wait room, held him in my lap...never touched the floor. when i called this morning to tell the vet what was going on they said it sounded like kennel cough - WHAT, how could this be?!?!?
now he is just sleeping at me feet. we go to the vet at 2...ugh, have to wait in the car and they'll call me on my cell phone to come in! is it contagious to humans?
My guess is he contracted it while at the breeder's house - don't know how common that is. Antibiotics will get him over that quickly - it is not a big deal.
It is not contagious to humans - don't worry. If you have another dog though, he/she will probably get it. Even if they are vaccinated, they can contract it - it is a MUCH less severe case though.
Both of my Doodles had kennel cough a couple months ago, and it does sound like what they had. When they coughed it sounded just like something was caught in their throat. The good news is that with the medication, they recovered quickly and were back to their normal goofy selves in just a couple days. The incubation period is from 2 - 14 days, so he probably contracted it prior to coming home. If the vet confirms this is what he has, you may want to alert the breeder. I sure hope he feels better soon.
Kennel cough is contagious - he had to have come into contact with it at the breeders. Yoiu must call them and let them know. Just a few days on antibiotics and he will be fine. YOU on the other hand, need to have a glass of wine. This is just the beginning!!!!!!
Enjoy!! this crazy, wonderful world of Doodles!!!!
funny, as soon as my husband came home i said time to open a great bottle. wine is running smoothly st this point...when it rains it poors! anyhow definitely kennel cough and on the antibiotic. called the breeder and she knows because she has a bunch of coughing pups:(
So sorry to hear your puppy is not feeling well. Too bad the breeder didn't call you FIRST. It would have saved you some guessing, worrying and time... You will find LOTS of help, advice and support here! Oh yeah... And DO invest in some of your favorite wine! That will definitely come in handy! Cheers! Hope all is well in a couple of days!
Too bad the breeder isn't paying for the vet bill, the antibiotics and the albon (which is the treatment of choice for coccidia). I hope the puppy feels better soon. Congratulations on getting your doodle :-)
