Hi everyone-

Bennett just got his nails trimmed, and the groomer mentioned that it was important to ask the vet to remove his dew claws when he gets neutered. She said that keeping dew claws can often lead to issues and it is more difficult to keep trimmed than the others.

Benny will not be getting neutered until he is almost 6 months old per vet instructions. What do you think about removing dew claws this late? I keep seeing such controversial opinions.

Thanks in advance.

I  have dogs with their dew claws and without.  I THOUGHT it was best to have the dew claws removed because I have heard that they can get their dew claw snagged on things and torn.  I have had my dog get his dew claw caught and pulled a little - I suppose it's like when I snag my little toe on something (yes, my dh says to watch where my feet are).  This certainly gives me something to think about!

Regarding the original question - I would not get my dogs dew claws removed at 6 months old.  I spoke with my vet and she recommends removing dewclaws within 3 days of birth.  For larger breeds, she prefers at 2 days because the longer you wait, the more painful and difficult it can be.
