Hi Emily, we have a very large, very active group here on DK,The Food Group, where we have a list of recommended food brands and treats as well as lots of information about every aspect of feeding and digestive issues. Please join us.
To answer your question, there is no commercial food that compares in any way to Hills ZD or any other Rx food which contains hydrolyzed protein. The good news is that you don't need it. A limited ingredient single protein formula from one of our recommended brands, utilizing a protein source that your pup has never had, will work great and be much healthier.
However, it's really important that you not change his food at the same time that you are weaning off the Tylan. That's really going to wreak havoc on his digestive system.
When our dog had a parasite this is what we did:
Used a quality Probiotic - Proviable is an excellent animal one. Order it on Amazon in CAPSULE FORM - open and sprinkle on the food or, we found it easier to mix it with a bit of peanut butter. or sugar free applesauce. You must give it at least two hours apart from the antibiotic. In our dog's case, even Proviable didn't do the trick so we used a human probiotic called VSL#3 CAPSULES which we purchased at CVS (found in Target stores). It must be kept refrigerated. We gave it to him for about a month to ensure that he had the right bacteria in his gut.
We also switched to a kibble for sensitive stomachs like Wellness Simple. It has a single protein source. https://www.wellnesspetfood.com/natural-dog-food/simple-dogs Since we feed our dogs grain-free, we chose the Salmon and Potato.
After about a month we were able to discontinue the Probiotic and switch him back to our regular grain-free food which, for us is Orijen.
Glad you mentioned the probiotics, Nancy. Very important.
