So, I am not a runner by any means, but since I am getting married I decided its time get get up and do something! I have read that large dogs should not run until they are fullly grown due to their hips, bones, etc.
Archie is 8 months, about 58 lbs, so he does have some more growing to do. I "ran" with him this morning, it was nice and cool, and it was more of a fast trot/walk/jog/walk. But he did great! Totally was not out of breathe or anything (as I was sweting like crazy and out of breathe!) And we went for about almost a mile and a half.
Quesion- Do any of you run with your dogs? Do you think its ok if I am "running" with the pup even if he is not fullly grown? Ive asked te vet about it, and he says its totallly fine- but Im not sure! At most I would go 2 miles, so I think the problem is for long distances (5 miles or more)? Any thoughts?
Thanks!

My almost one-year old pup could probably run with me, but she cannot yet be trusted to stay on my right side. In the past when I've tried we can get going at a nice steady jog when she'll suddenly dart in front of me to go after a squirrel or bunny. And since I've already injured a rotator cuff walking her, I don't need to add a broken leg to the list.
Did any of you deal with paw pads tearing? I tried some mushers wax on Yeti today because his pads started tearing the last time (1st) time we ran. I am looking into the option of boots. We mostly run on the pavement (we have nice long trails here, otherwise its usually street/sidewalk).
Picco hikes and runs with me. We do pavement sometimes but mostly trail running. I started him as a pup with short, more like brisk walks but always let him sniff around and do some training, take him back home then continue my run, gradually increasing his portion but giving him days off too. He makes my runs much more enjoyable (keeping it playful and letting him lead me off trail sometimes) and keeps me from getting too serious about it!
Dogs vary. I had two of the same breed. (tollers) One could run forever; the other was exhausted by 4 miles. I don't know if it is a good idea or not, but I ran with them as soon as they could run; certainly 6 months.
The second one is 16 now and still walking 1.5 miles a day; so I am pretty sure it didn't hurt her any.
