Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Katie is an 18 month and 27 pound mini goldendoodle. And we're from the flatlands of Kansas. This summer I would like to drive out to Colorado and hike up Barr trail to Barr camp. It's the trail up to the top of Pike's Peak. We would only be going as far as the camp, so halfway. It's 7 miles with a fairly significant increase in elevation.

She and I are both in reasonable shape. I've done this several times, but never with a dog. I know I can make it (not setting any land speed records, but slow and steady gets there!) I just don't want to ask too much of her. Let's be honest. She's probably in better shape than I am. And I'm going to be carrying all the stuff. But still, it's something she's never done before. And I just wanted to get some opinions from people who do these sorts of things before we are halfway (of halfway) up a mountain!

Thanks, Stacy

Katie,

We moved to Colorado early last fall. We did get the dogs out on a mountain trail near Estes Park right away and they did just fine with the altitude change. But the hot dry weather in the summer is worse for them. Also, they were walking 4-5 miles a day routinely and up to 7 occasionally back near sea level in Illinois first.

We see plenty of other dogs running gleefully up even 14'ers, so whatever they work up to slowly I am sure works.

Ours is near 30 pounds so about your dog's size. She is approx a year old. She regularly runs 5Ks which equals 3.2.  For us it's a jog, for her a walk/trot.  I don't know about 7 miles.  But, she is still ready to go after the 5K.  Also, she has done it twice in a day before (with two different people).  So perhaps if she's in good condition it will be OK.  There is a picture of her on the Mini Goldendoodles forum (What size is your mini??) which shows how she looks standing and the build for comparison.

I think that we're going to be okay for distance. I've started using map my run and some of our walks through the woods are 4 miles, only she's off leash and running back and forth - so I bet she's already doing close to 7! And she takes a nice nap when we get home but if I wanted to play in the back yard she would be ready. I think I probably just have to think about the elevation. And even then the max elevation would be 10,200 feet. So not crazy. Thanks for the comparison though! I'm going to look at your girl right now!

Oh! I think your pup and mine could be a matched set!

I agree, they are quite a pair!  They look like they could be littermates!
