Today's paper announced our local shelters are temporarily closed for adoptions because of canine influenza. The article recommended some precautions for dog owners. I will be keeping Calla and Luca close to home for now.

If you are concerned, check with your vet, there is a flu vac. for dogs.  It is a series of 2 shots.  Bailey already got hers with her  puppy shots...
Thanks. I know and will check with the vet when I go in November for their Lyme vaccinations.
Jack gets his flu shot every year!!!! Thanks for posting the reminder...
Thanks for posting this. I'll ask our vet when i take Max later this month.
I really hadn't heard of a flu shot for dogs but I will have to check it out. This reminds me I had better get my own flu shot!
I need to see if my guys got it in their annual shots. I hope so, but if not, I certainly am glad that you brought this to my attention.
The first time they get it, you  have to bring them back in a few weeks for a booster, and then after that it is just annually. Jack's was not included in his annual. They always have signs up though, some of the daycares around my area require the dog to have the flu shot during the fall and winter months in order to go to their program.
Wow thanks for sharing! I guess we will stay close to home also. We were just at the vet, I winder why he never suggested it? (which is why we are switching vets)
Good info, thanks.  Will ask about that when we see the vet next week!
Good info.  Harlow goes in for her annual this week.  I will check on getting her one.  Lacey was spayed on Thursday and is on antibiotics.  We will have to wait for hers.

One of the "P"s in the DHPP (or DHLPP) shot many dogs gets stands for Parainfluenza, so most dogs are getting a flu vaccine anyway. Maybe this dog flu is a different strain that requires additional vaccinating, I don't know..

Flu vaccine can also be given intranasally, like bordatella vaccine, which is what we do.

Oh, thanks, Karen fo the info on the DHPP!  We had both Sydney and Olivia vacccinated with the DHPP in the Spring.  In fact, Sydney got the DHPP along with the Rabbies vaccine (big mistake we made) and her immune system started attacking her organs and we almonst lost her.  I just had Olivia to the Animal Hospital today for an emergency visit but also asked about whether we should get the Flu Vaccine since there were articles in the paper today about canine influenza.  The Vet seemed to think that if the dog could be exposed to a stressful situation and around dogs with coughs, then a vaccine would help.  She seemed to think that it's a risk situation and it depends on where you take your dogs and if they are in stressful environments,.
