Today's paper announced our local shelters are temporarily closed for adoptions because of canine influenza. The article recommended some precautions for dog owners. I will be keeping Calla and Luca close to home for now.

See below. Parainfluenza and influenza are different viruses/illnesses.
Canine Influenza shot can not be given internasally.
Bailey received the CIV vac.  This is different than the parainfluenza vac. It is an injection.  My vet recommends it for any dog who is possibly going to be boarded or any dog being exposed to the public...

Here is a really good overview on canine Influenza.

Is is a different illness than canine parainfluenza.

I am not sure if this will open. It is a picture of the lung lesions from all dogs exposed. ten percent risk of death but all will end up with lung lesions. It is graphic so open at own risk

It opened and I saw one set of lugs with awful looking lesions.

Hey how did you get a picture of my lungs on here?? JK.. I had no idea what so ever that it could be so serious in a dog. Honestly, I have always given Jack the vaccine because I had the flu two times in my life, the real flu and it was hell....

I am glad Jack got his shot.. F... Based on your Bergen County newspaper, I would say you live very close to where I used to live in NJ.... I worked at Saint Clares in Denville, NJ, grew up in West Milford, lived in Wayne and Vernon.

Too bad I don't live there anymore.. I do when I am well go back to visit.. Maybe someday I can meet you for coffee.

That would be nice.
Great. I'm taking Stella to the vet today, she has been hacking and coughing for the last two days. At first I thought she had something stuck in her throat because it seemed like she was trying to hack something up. Now it is definitely more of a croup sounding cough.
It is very difficult to diagose. The symptoms are the same as bordetalia. If the vet does not send out for testing it never gets confirmed. It is very costly to test if the vet thinks it is "Boradetella". Only when the dog's cough continues for an extended period of time, and infects the lower lungs does it become life threntening. That is the reason why that there are not more confirmed cases.

Give us an update on Stella...

I feel bad for the poor dogs affected!!! Hopefully they'll all feel better soon!!!
