dog smell in doodles?

Hi.  I have a question about "dog smell" that I hope doesn't offend anyone. 

 

We don't currently have a doodle, but are very, very interested in getting one this summer.  So to test the puppy world we have been very lucky to puppy sit a 4 month old black lab for the past week.  We (me, myhusband and our two young boys) LOVE him...he is so wonderful and so much fun...we all can't wait to get a puppy.  The only small thing that we don't like is his smell...it's not the sweet puppy smell he had when he was smaller it's more the big dog smell.  So, I thought...well maybe one other benefit of doodles is maybe they smell less???

My F1 adult labradoodle sheds pretty heavily, and he has that 'wet dog' smell when he gets wet. In the past I had true non-shedding breeds like purebred poodles, and they never had this. But my labradoodle only has that smell when he's wet.
I have never noticed that a clean dry healthy dog of any breed has an unpleasant odor.

The Australian MultiGens absolutely smell less than regular dogs. Even my grandmother commented on his lack of "wet dog" smell after he went swimming! Also, don't underestimate how fabulous the no shedding thing is either! It is SO nice not to have to worry about dog hair in the house! My sister brings over her lab, and I go crazy for the next week trying to get the smell and hair out of the house!
Do your research before you get one from a breeder, because some will still smell and shed!

I have never done a comparison of Doodles because to do it you would need a huge group of all the different Doodles and then smell, groom, etc. them for probably a few weeks to find out who smells and who sheds. All I know is that I have an F1 Standard Goldendoodle with a wavy fleece coat. She doesn't shed, though after a very thorough brushing there will be hairs in the brush/comb mainly because of the tangles and knots I had to brush out. Gracie has never had a doggie smell and when she is wet she smells like our hair smells when it is wet. I just commented to my DH the other night how Gracie hadn't had a bath in 3 weeks and I could bury my face in her hair and it doesn't smell like a dog. Believe me...I know what DOG smells like. We had a Lab before Gracie who shed and got stinky by the end of the week. I wouldn't let him on the carpet because they also have oily skin/fur and it transfers to the carpet. Gracie has no oily or greasy look to her at all. She sleeps in our bed and sometimes her head is on my pillow. There is no way this would ever happen if she shed or was stinky! Still, it is hit or miss on the shedding of Doodles.

I,ve had two labs and I have to say I loved their smell. Of course, I had a doggie shower that I used whenever they came in from outdoors or going to exercise, swim, etc. I wouldn't use shampoo on them unless they rolled, but I never thought they had a doggie smell using this method. I don't think my new doodle puppy Sheila smells either. Maybe the puppy needs a bath. I'm not offended at all. But I don't allow muddy feet in my house. All my dogs go into the shower if they are dirty! And I have to say the labs were easier to bathe and faster to dry. But the shedding!!

I know exactly what you are talking about with regard to dog smell! With our two doodles if there is "smell", something is wrong like ear infection or anal gland issues or something like that. Otherwise, no smell. I have one shedder and one non shedder (although I get lots in the brush when I brush her).

I have 5 dogs that live in my house and none of them smell. Honestly!! (If they did, my mom would tell me when she visits.) We have a F1 labradoodle (that sheds) 2 goldendoodles (that don't shed) a golden retriever (sheds) and a Chihuahua (shed's but is so small we don't notice.) My dogs are all bathed on a regular basis. When was the last time the lab had a bath? Like Lucy said, "smell" alerts me to a problem or infection. He may just need a good bath. :o)

I bathe about every three weeks (unless they're muddy - then more often), and they really don't smell. Even when they're wet, I don't notice an odor.

My Doodle is an f1b and does NOT shed at all (from what I know, there is no way to be sure your doodle won't shed for sure, but the f1b is your best bet) I have also noticed she does not smell like a dog. When I change her bedding she smells of our detergent and when we bath her she smells fresh for weeks!

Before we got a doodle I read that poodles repelle odor, dirt and oil! We have a Shih-tzu and never realized how much she smelled until we had our doodle!

We have a multi-gen Australian Labradoodle from a reputable breeder. She is non-shedding and non-smelly (really....even after she swims) when her allergies aren't acting up. Last year (at 3) she developed seasonal allergies and when she has a flare-up, she gets a "yeasty" smell. (I've read one description that says they smell like corn chips! It's true!) Once our dog is treated for the allergies, the smell goes away again.

When you research breeders, ask about the allergy incidence in their dogs....ask if they follow-up over the years because they don't present until the dog is betw 2-5 years old. Hopefully, they will be honest with you. It seems that the allergies aren't common....but they will cause your dog to be very uncomfortable and he/she will may get smelly. There are groups devoted to the allergy/atopic dermatitis discussion on DK, so you may want to read more.

Do consider a rescue doodle, too. We will go that route next time. We were novices....now we're not...so we'll do a rescue next time. (We needed the security of a breeder to walk us through the first time....had I known about DK, I'm not so sure I would have felt it was so necessary.)

Peri gets that wet dog smell when she is wet, but as soon as she dries off, she is fine. We hardly ever bathe her either - it is good for their skin not to over wash them. As long as we comb the dirt out of her, I love her smell.
And remember not all doodles are shed-free! Peri sheds a teeny bit, but some shed more, some not at all!

3 F1s here, no daily smell. They do smell like wet after playing in the rain, but that is likely due to what they bring in on their coat, rolling in mud puddles and such.
