Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi.  I have a question about "dog smell" that I hope doesn't offend anyone.

We don't currently have a doodle, but are very, very interested in getting one this summer.  So to test the puppy world we have been very lucky to puppy sit a 4 month old black lab for the past week.  We (me, myhusband and our two young boys) LOVE him...he is so wonderful and so much fun...we all can't wait to get a puppy.  The only small thing that we don't like is his smell...it's not the sweet puppy smell he had when he was smaller it's more the big dog smell.  So, I thought...well maybe one other benefit of doodles is maybe they smell less???

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

Not knowing a whole lot about other dogs, I can tell you that the ONLY time Penny has a "dog smell" is when she gets wet. Once the fur gets soaked, she's a smelly pup. But other than that, no!
Thanks so much for all your thoughts on dog smell. We have let the puppy go in the creek a couple times...so maybe that has contributed to his smell a bit. Never really thought about that before! Sounds like labs might be a little bit smellier than most because of their coat type. Anyways, it's an added bonus that a doodle might not smell. Thanks so much...we are going to miss this puppy so much when he goes home tomorrow, but are really looking forward to finding a puppy for our family this summer. Thanks again!
Be sure to check out our "What to Look for in a Breeder" discussion, which I cannot find right now - anyone? We also have an "Owner Recommended Breeders" group on here:

These breeders must health test the parents, offer guarantees, and other important things.

GOOD LUCK! you must keep us posted on what you decide.
My doodle absolutely does not smell. He can go for months without a bath and still doesn't smell. We just came in from outside and playing in the wet grass. There is a little wet grass smell and he is pretty wet, but no doggy smell. The grass smell will go away as soon as he dries. He doesn't even get the wet grass smell in summer time it is only now that the grass has that earthy smell.
I know EXATLY what you are talking about. We had a golden retriever for 11 years... and he did get that smell... sometimes I only noticed it when we left for vacation and then came home and it was in the air of our CLEAN house. But not now.. Tori is an aussiedoodle and she does not hold a smell. sometimes, when she is close to the time when she needs to be groomed/bathed she may smell after being outside and 'sweating', but she doesn't hold the smell at all. I do notice it tho' when I visit relatives and friends who have other breeds. As far as "all else" with the puppy world... well - that's a different story! LOL Enjoy reading through some posts! Good luck with getting your new dog!
Yep besides occasional anal glands and some bad breath, my F1 goldendoodle never smells. We don't give her any smelly treats or bones, which I've noticed make other dogs paws and mouth smelly. We also use puppy wipes to clean her up between baths, we only bathe her once every few months unless she gets really muddy playing.
Oooo... Yup! we have those "anal gland smells" too - but that's all breeds I believe (although we never had that before with any other of our dogs)
I hate to break the trend but my goldendoodle does have the doggy smell. Webster is a 1 yr old f2, non-shedding, curly coated chocolate goldendoodle. He is a wonderful dog but when he comes in the house after playing outside there is a doggy odor. Our golden/collie mix had a terrible doggy smell after being outside but it would lessen depending on which food he was being fed. Funny thing, we always fed a good lamb & rice but Beneful helped him have less smell. Maybe I'll see if that helps Webster.
F1 Goldendoodle, wavy fleece/hair combo coat, light shedding just in the brush, no smell when dry, wet dog smell when wet, only bathed after a dog park romp when others have slobbered on him or he is full of mud
Lilly is a f1 and only sheds a little. She does smell when she is wet but not when she is dry.How ever she does have stinky breath depending on what treats I give her.
