Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
To think 10 years ago I left my keys in the ignition and slept with my doors unlocked. Well, not anymore.
I dont think I was alone with those practices and most of us have had to change. But have we changed the ways we look at dog safety?
Pet theft is on the rise. According to the AKC, in 2013, the AKC tracked more than 590 pet thefts from news and customer reports, a 31% increase over 2012.
These thefts ranged from puppies being stolen from pet stores to purebred pets being snatched from cars, shelters, and their own back yards.
There are a number of reasons why dog napping is increasing and most of it has to do with money. Stolen dogs are often sold for nefarious purposes and while ALL dog owners should be careful, the following dogs are stolen most often:

10 DOG BREEDS MOST LIKELY TO BE STOLEN
10. Labrador Retriever
The most common reason dogs are stolen are:
Pure bred dogs are stolen as their street value that can fetch thousands of dollars with little effort from or expense by thief.
Stolen purebred dogs, especially toys, puppies, and designer breeds such as Labradoodles, are sold for half the asking price of a dog from a legitimate breeder.
Dogs that are not spayed or neutered may be sold and shipped to puppy mills or used for breeding.
Thieves steal animals and then collect the reward money.
Stolen pets are used "bait dogs" to train fighting dogs. Most commonly, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers and American Pit Bull Terriers.
Thieves sell stolen and lost animals for research facilities that use dogs for testing and experimentation. These people also acquire their animals through flea markets, newspaper ads, and respond to ads for free pets.

Joanne, We really think that our son's rescue labradoodle had been stolen. High dollar puppies are not typically found as strays in the area (industrial and low income) where he was picked up. He was not malnourished, injured or even very dirty. Our thoughts are that he was a stolen puppy who escaped during a huge rain storm that occurred. He was never claimed which also supports our idea of theft because who would not be looking for their 3 month-old puppy that cost them big bucks at purchase, unless he wasn't in his own home-town area?
Exactly. They take them states away.
I follow my county's Lost and Found FB page where I see people every day say, " No, that is not the dog. That neighborhood is too far away" < just across town>
A few weeks ago a tiny dog was missing and just 4 hours later found 35 miles away. How does that happen?
Dogs with no voice end up in the strangest places.
Creepy how people think to make a living these days
I'm sure that figuring in these statistics are the pet store thefts, which almost always involve Yorkies and toy breeds.
Just put 'em in your pocket!
Darn, I didnt put the link in here. It did say where the stats came from. BRB
Here is the part I didnt add. I'll plug it into the discussion.

So sad that this happens! There are some really horrible people in this world!
THis has been a problem in our neighborhood. Our dogs our never outside alone ever and I have a fenced in yard but while I was away (gone for several months for my surgery) We got repeated phone calls that dogs went missing from our neighborhood, mostly they were dogs that were kept outside but not all of them.
My personal gate to my fence was found open several times, Jack would run back out given the chance. We had to put a pad lock on it to keep it from being open. I think people are opening the gates hoping no one pays attention and they let their dogs out and they run away.
We have huge dog fighting rings around here, it is just so crazy.
Twisted sick people. A friend had his 6 year old JR stolen out of his yard in the country and I had a one year old JR stolen by a pet sitter, vetted by my ex. The jerk said she ran away. I was crazy paranoid about this when Finn was a pup. Now I'm just paranoid. He only stays with friends if I travel. He's never been allowed out by himself and I only leave him in a locked car in a harness where I can see the car and I will not be more than a minute. Good to make everyone aware, Joanne.
Cheryl, I am so sorr
And this is why when everyone in the house is all gone, Orwell gets put into the laundry room (until he is reliable enough to be left alone in the house).
Sometimes I don't think people realize that most dog owners think of their dog as a child and suffer the same emotional distress that would occur when their human child is kidnapped.
Terrible. I would be crushed if someone stole my dog.
