Doodle + 2 car seats in regular sized SUV?

We are expecting our second child any day now (currently have a 20 month old) and am wondering if anyone has been able to fit 2 car seats and a restrained doodle in a standard SUV (one without a third row).

We have a Grand Cherokee and it has been fine with the one car seat (in the center) and our doodle restrained via a harness/tether on one of the sides (forgetting the name, but think it is the rough rider).

We already know that we will need to put the car seats on each side and are **hoping** we can still fit the harness in the center so everyone can ride safely and (somewhat comfortably). We don't travel that often with our dog; most summer weekends for about a three hour trip, with one inevitable break (and that was when it was just one baby).

Has anyone been able to travel this way? Are there any safe options to use (part of) the cargo area with a dog?! Also, are there any restraints for dogs in the front seat (this would NOT be our preferred option but would mainly be if the passenger needed to sit with the baby)

This works great for Clover & Apollo.  I just use the shorter strap so they don't get tangled up with each other.

Daisy rides in the back cargo area (no liner just blankets) with her restraint...she is perfectly fine back there.

The liner comes in handy when we go to the river or lake.

What do you do if you ever luggage or gear? Are you still able to safely use that harness or do you end up using your backseat for your stuff?

We have a hitch and use a cargo carrier similiar to this one.
