Ok, so here is the latest drama.  Poor Boomer gets sopping wet whenever he drinks from his bowl.  Aside from drippin all over the floor and leaving wet spots all over my lap, The bigger issue is how badly his beard smells.  It takes forever to dry and without fail he drinks again and starts the cycle all over again.  His beard never gets a chance to dry until the morning after he has slep!  I am looking for a natural solution.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,

Jeri and Boomer!

My mini LD has a beard. He is 7 months old. He does get wet but because he is small I have not noticed a smelly beard. Maybe his food gets stuck in the beard or he is getting into something. Or maybe it could be your water. We do give our dog yogurt, maybe that helps his beard not smell. Good luck in figuring this out. I am sure more people will reply.
The smell in Boomer's beard is a musty one. I believe it is caused by his beard wet all the time. I thought that maybe there was an essential oil I could put in his water that was okay for dogs that would kill off the bacteria or mold.
I could be wrong but I don't think you want your dog to drink an essential oil. For the most part sometimes people dilute with water and may spray it. You would want to check and make sure it doesn't have any side effects. Some can cause health problems and some can burn the skin. We use a water pitcher with a filter.
Hi,

My girl Willis, has a stinky beard too. To help, I keep it very short, which I prefer anyway. I also take my clippers and carefully trim all the hair at the very edges of her muzzle lip. That gets rid of the longish hair that 'collects' the food particles. I take my fingers and hold up most of the muzzle hair and use the edge of my clippers to just cut off the very bottom 1/2 inch or less. The 'top hair' covers it completely, so you never know it was done. Works well. :+)
Have it cut or shaved down, says the lady with the short-haired dog :-) There is a reason that the much-reviled poodle haircut comes with a "clean face."
But I know most doodle owners don't want to get that cut, so try shampooing it. I use Burt;s Bees shampoo for babies (tear free).
My profile pic shows Porter's mostly clean face. Hubby would like the full poodle hairdo that his childhood dog had.
I don't do the poodle cut on Buddy's face but I do cut his beard a little shorter to about half or 3/4 inch. It does help with the dripping water and dampness. Just a thought.
How about putting a little lemon in the water? We drink that.
Gracie usually has mud on her face and she too is always wet and drippy. I keep shampoo diluted with water in a plastic squeeze bottle by the hose and we shampoo/rinse the front paws and face every day. I don't keep a long beard on her...after all, Gracie is a girl! If we don't shampoo it she can also get stinky. But instead...she smells just like Pantene Shampoo!
I agree with the others. No beard, no odor, no problem and I like how it looks.
Yup. we cut Sonny's beard off. Was just too wet all the time and then matted so badly. So much easier and cleaner without it. Sorry, prob. not the answer you were looking for.
When y'all say beard, are you just talking about the hair underneath the mouth, or is it hair all around? Do you clip the hair growing out from the nose too? I need more details! I trimmed ellas just underneath, but she still wet and cold after drinking.
I think we pretty much all mean the hair growing out from under the mouth. You still do have the "snout" hair to deal with. Though some people let that grow rather long and way over beyond the lips. I try to keep Gracie's just about at the lip line. It all really depends on the look you want and the up keep.
