Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

On Sunday while driving in front of my DD leaving a friends house I passed a young lady walking an obvious "ginger red" goldendoodle, he was tall and lanky and obviously an older puppy. Of course driving by made me slow down and ask "is that a doodle?" which of course caused my DD behind me to have her DH text me to stop talking to the doodle and drive. And then this morning while driving to work I passed a woman walking her, again obvious doodle but I was on a main road and could not ask which golden or lab....thinking to myself, wow, I sure have been seeing a lot of doodles lately and no sooner did I think that but I pulled next to another car with a cream colored doodle in it. We just smiled and nodded at each others doodles in our respective cars. I typically don't engage men, if it had been a woman I assure you we would have had a conversation.

Doodles doodles everywhere. Has anyone else noticed there seems to be a whole lot of them lately?

Errr...60% of Golden Retrievers die of some form of cancer, and genetic diseases are rampant in Poodles and  Labs. So I'm not sure that popularity hasn't hurt those breeds as well. But they are definitely not ruined. :)

But can't  you say that about most "pure breeds" German Shepherds with  Hip Dysplasia, Boxers with Kidney Failure and the likes?

There are some genetic diseases associated with most breeds, but the more popular the breed in terms of the numbers being bred, the longer the list of genetic diseases. The puppy mills and BYBs are not interested in breeding less common or less popular breeds, so when only quality breeders are producing a certain breed, that breed is going to be healthier in general.

Luckily we have the means to make awareness more possible on DK. That is why I am always happy when someone interested finds DK first before making their choice of breeders. I wish I had. Though I wouldn't give Daisy up for the world I would have had many more questions and answers before selecting my breeder.

Very good article from Petfinder on the tragic effects of the Disney movies and subsequent increased popularity of Dalmatians, which exactly illustrates this point:

And another on how the popluarity following Disney's Lady & the Tramp ruined the temperaments of the American Cocker Spaniels: http://www.vetstreet.com/dogs/cocker-spaniel

From the article: "Popularity has truly been a curse to the Cocker Spaniel, and he's one of the favorite breeds of puppy millers, Internet retailers, and pet stores, who sell sad-eyed, floppy-eared, adorable puppies that too often grow up to be unstable, noisy, nervous dogs who are difficult to housetrain and have a tendency to snap and even bite."

"The popularity of the Cocker skyrocketed after the release of Disney’s classic movie “Lady and the Tramp” in 1955. The immense popularity fueled a rise in poor breeding that resulted in some bad temperaments, but Cocker breeders have worked hard to correct the situation. It is still important today, however, to find a responsible breeder who maintains the breed’s hallmark cheery disposition rather than continuing to put out the fearful and snappish dogs that nearly ruined the breed.

My thoughts--The weather is warmer so we are out and about and so are other folks.  It is not December and the world does not lock down at 6pm.  So everyone is exposed, driving in cars, walking dogs, going to dog parks, and we notice things more.

But, I also agree, that there is an increase in popularity.

Good point, Joanne. There also seem to be a lot more kids in my neighborhood lately, too. :)

Yes and I see other dogs as well, just seems like I am seeing Doodles more ofter than say two summers ago.

I met two doodles on Saturday.  They were littermates, partee color.  Beautiful but too excited to behave well.

Haven't actually met doodles, but have met a few folks this past week when I've been out with Gus and Lilly who asked if they were goldendoodles. Which is different than the usual what breed are they question. All three times they had doodles themselves so they recognized them as doodles.

You can't swing a cat by me without hitting a doodle. They are everywhere. There seem to be a lot of Portuguese water dogs here also. Many of them look very similar to doodles.
