Hi all,

I've got a serious issue.  My 4 year Dood (mostly Poodle) jumps tall fences in a single bound!  I lease a home that has 4' chain link fence.  He jumped it to visit dogs next door. I extended the fence 4 ', making it an 8' fence.  He jumped it.  I don't know what else to do.  I put the large plastic lattice fencing between my yard and the neighbor's yard behind me, which stands about 9'.  He climbs it and uses it to leap over the 8' extended fence between my neighbor and me.  So, I am moving to a new home, with 4' chain link fencing, with dogs on both sides of the yard.  I honestly don't know what to do.  My only option is that plastic lattice stuff, but if he can climb it at 9' and leap over the top, I will be in trouble.

Any ideas besides rehoming him to someone who has a tall, all wood/plastic fence that he can't climb? (and believe me, I may be forced to rehome him just to keep him safe.  Feel frantic.  Don't have a lot of money to do much (I've already spent close to $300 on something that is not working.  Help!!

I think you're going to have to go out with him every time on a long line, and not allow him to be in the yard unsupervised.

I agree with Karen, I think you are going to have to supervise him when he is outside. Put him on a long tie down, but away from the fence and anything else he could get hurt on trying to climb.  Years and years ago I had a golden retriever that would take a running jump onto the trampoline and bounce on over to the neighbors backyard. It was funny to watch the first few times, then after that it became annoying to us and the neighbors. We had to fence him off from the trampoline area.

My Boris just walks up and over walls no matter what height. We do not let him outside unsupervised ever. If he does go to visit the neighbours he cannot get to a road and we call him back and he returns.

We have a fence climber and we never allow her to be outside unsupervised. We also use a vibrating collar and have trained her with a beeping noise that if she gets too close to the fence the sound goes off and then vibrating. It still means we have to be out there with her as it is remote controlled but it allows her to run around, play fetch and have the freedom to roam in our yard. It didn't take long to train her (these very smart doodles). I hope you find a solution that works for you and your doodle.

Thanks all.  That is what I was afraid of.  My job has me out all day until late at night sometimes.  And I am a single person with no one to help with the animals.  Not being able to let them out during these long stints is not good either.  Don't know how I am going to deal with this.  Sometimes I am gone 8 - 10 hours.  Not too terribly often, but at least 2 - 3 times a month.  I am going to try a couple of new things when I get to the new place and see how it works.  The yard is not nearly as large as where I live now, so reinforcing the fence won't be as expensive, if it even works.  I will look at those vibrating collars.  Never heard of those.

I agree with everyone that it just isn't safe to allow him to be outside unsupervised until you have a fence you know he can't jump over.  I also worry about dogs not being let outside to potty for up to 10 hours.  Is there a neighbor or friend who might be able to let them out during the day at least once?

I don't know any of the neighbors yet.  I am a very responsible pet owner, have rescued animals for 40 years. This is the first time I have had any issue with my dogs.  My rescue Doodle is a tough one for me. I do have friends who come and let him out now when I have meetings into the night, and they still may.  I have always found a way for them to be give outside time when I am gone for most of the day.  Like I said, it is not an every day occurrence.  Maybe twice a month.  I also take them to work with me when I don't have late meetings.   Trust me I do not just let them out in the backyard unless it is safe.  My backyard in my current house has been safe for them for 4 years. I have dogs right behind me, and the neighbor and I have put up the tall lattice fencing and it has worked fine.  Now some other folks have rescued two dogs next-door the house behind me, and my dog jumps my side neighbor's fence so he can run up and down the fence line to play with them  This has just started within the last two months. Because of the way my back fence and my side fence work, he has figured out that he can climb part way up the lattice fence to get high enough to get into my side neighbors side yard.  I will work on a solution and for the time being, they won't be going outside unsupervised.

Sounds like you are trying to think through all the best ways to deal with this. Good luck and hang in there. I hope you find a workable solution.

Ditto!

I have seen LARGE cage like structures with tops that could be put up to a door (dog door) so the dog could go in and out but unless he is a digger also, he couldn't get out.
